My father was running Win95 and an HP ScanJet6200C scanner. It worked fine.

He got nailed by a virus, so when I re-installed his system, I gave him Win98SE.

I installed the software for the scanner first. I shut the machine off, and plugged in the usb cord to the back of his computer. When I turn on the machine, nothing happens. It doesn't detect new hardware.

I've tried rebooting and or shutting the machine off several times. This was suggested in the readme file.

I even left the usb cable connected while I re-installed the software for the scanner. That didn't work.

Any ideas? It was sooo easy the first time with Win95, what the heck am I missing???

Thanks

i have a 5300cse, and to install it, i loaded the software that came with it and then restarted---after windows was back up i connected the scanner to my computer (usb)--then it recognized new hardware and has been fine from then on.

Did 98 resintall the USB drivers? Check Device Manager and make sure that they are there. Without them, it can't detect a USB device. If your reinstalled 98 from scratch, especially FE, it does not always install them.

Yes, the USB root hub and the other item were listed in device manager.

Hmmm, I connected the usb while the system is off. I didn't try to connect the USB while the system was on. I know it's supposed to be hot-swappable....maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

No, except I know the scanner was working only days before I upgrade from 95 to 98SE.

I would definitely try plugging in the USB device while the computer is on. That is how I have always done it, and if I'm not mistaken most directions I've seen with USB devices tell you to connect the device with the computer on. Just a little reassurance to what c4t4h suggested you do, and you are going to try tomorrow. :)
