Need help: cable modem question.

My cable company (Charter) has a cable modem compatibility list.

To list a few: Toshiba PCX2200 and Motorola SB4200 is on that list.

Question:

Am I able to use cable modem other than the one listed on their compatibility list?

If yes, how do I know which cable modem is compatible?

Can anyone tell me does D-Link DCM-200 fits Charter cable?

Often times "compatible" means "this is what we use". Normally you need a modem that is DOCSIS compliant. But typically, all of them are.

Another good way to find out is to ask the company itself. If they don't give you any more info then ask around (BestBuy and CC will often know what's compatible).

There is a lot of Modems that will work. However if something goes wrong they probably will refuse to do anything since it is not the Modem that they know.

There are no real differences between most of these modems so you better off going with the one that they are capable to support.

A modem is long term investment. Both modems that you mentioned are good modems, it does not make sense to buy another one in order to save few bucks.

a friend just offer the Dlink to me and is like $30 cheaper than Toshiba and Motorola.

Will you take it? 😕

In case of trouble with your cable Interent connection, the first question that would be asked will be about the Modem; at the moment that the ISP will find that you are using a Modem that is not on their list they will not support you.

Unlike other components the Modem is the first part of the connection and can not be bypassed for the sake of debugging the system. You can bypass the whole network or components of the Network by connecting the Modem directly to one computer, but the Modem can not be bypassed.

Unless you have a source that can land you (fast upon request) a Modem that is certified by your ISP, you are going sooner or later to face a silly situation.

It does not worth while $30.
