Need help building new computer ~ PLEASE :)

How does this look from Velocity (not including monitor):

Should I just get the lowest RAM and buy more from Newegg like mentioned?
 
The PC I configured for you on Velocity is the same one that Crimson recommended. The only problem is that it only comes with a 7600GS. You could call them and ask if they could substitute a different card, but if you aren't playing games, then you should be okay with that.

If you have Yahoo IM, I could walk you through the build.

The monitor is 1920x1200, so a 7300GT 256MB would do it for non-gaming usage.

7300GT runs from $70-90, and you can even get a silent one for about $89. You could even do some gaming with it, if you were willing to reduce the monitor's resolution while you played.

I have MSN Instant messenger. Do you have that? Should I skip out on the 4gb of ram and get that on my own?

Yes, definitely. Buy 2 pair of this for $234 shipped, install them yourself, and you'll save $227 🙂 plus you'll have a spare 1GB stick lying around. You could just get 3 dimms and add them, but it's safer to add them as exact matched pairs.

Also, stick with the intel integrated graphics, and then upgrade it yourself to the 7300gt I linked; save yourself $60 over the 7600GS.

That's not even a remote possibility of that happening. Velocity Micro is not going to build you a system missing some of the most important hardware. Not to mention it isn't even an option of removing it in the build set up.

Sorry but I hate microsoft, therefore I deleted MSN. If you configure the computer Crimson and I told you about, you can always come here if you are stuck and we'll give you a hand.
 
Yes, definitely. Buy 2 pair of this for $234 shipped, install them yourself, and you'll save $227 🙂 plus you'll have a spare 1GB stick lying around. You could just get 3 dimms and add them, but it's safer to add them as exact matched pairs.

Also, stick with the intel integrated graphics, and then upgrade it yourself to the 7300gt I linked; save yourself $60 over the 7600GS.

Right, chose that, then go to Newegg and buy your own video card and install it yourself. But you have to buy the RAM from them and since you are getting Vista with that PC, I would go ahead and get the 4GB of DDR667 RAM.
 
Now I'm curious as to what the difference would be between the HP and the Velocity. If they're configured the same... I'll have to try that.
 
Yup, choose 1GB ram (lowest avail) and the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000.

Then you can install your own ram and optionally install your own video card later. The computer will be fully functional out of the box. You may even want to just stick with the integrated graphics after you try it out - perhaps they'll be enough for you.

She won't ask for zero ram and no video, she'll ask for 1gb ram and integrated video (both are selectable options on the website). Minimum for VIsta is like 512mb right? or 1GB? I know 2GB is recommended, but it will certainly "run" on less.

Total price is $1283

then I'll spend the $228 for 4gb ram from newegg and how much was the video card? I thought it was $100. So that's $1611

It's listed on the left hand side at the bottom as Video Cards & Video Devices
 
Your only changes from the base config should be:
change processor to E6600 (+$170).
change warranty to 3yr/1yr (+$99).

Get the ram I linked, and get a video card if you're not happy with the integrated graphics performance.

Get whatever monitor you want, the Dell 24" is a splurge but worth it. You could get a 22" for $260 to save some money.
 
Crimson, if she only bought the 320GB HD, don't you think she would benefit from having a 150gb Raptor as a second HD? She would put her OS on the Raptor along with her apps and use the 320GB as media storage. My reasoning is that she runs a lot of intensive photo software.

Yes it'd technically be a bit faster, but installing a hard drive, installing the OS, and wiping the old OS is a lot of custom work for someone who's looking for a mostly-prebuilt computer. If velocity offered a raptor as a pre-installed primary drive for a reasonable price, I would recommend it, but sadly they don't.

EDIT: also might have trouble getting tech support from velocity if she changed the computer like that.
