Need help borging a machine!

My ex and the kids were in need of a better machine, so I loaded up one of my FX-60 crunchers and gave it to them for Christmas.

Now - I miss the stats, and I want to borg the machine.

I get the concept. I install BOINC as a service and use BAM to access it.

There are, however, things that I don't know. I don't know what they are, but I have confidence in my lack of knowledge.

I would appreciate any and all (positive and negative) input from people who have experience in this area.

Thanks.

I don't know what you don't know, so I wouldn't be able to help in that aspect.

I install BOINC as a service and use BAM to access it.

that's exactly what you need to do. when you go to bam, you can see the computers and which programs it's attached to. if it's not attached to anything, then attach it.

The particular computer is one that my children and my ex use. I need to know things like -- How hard is it to uninstall the BOINC service if it interferes too much with the things that they like to do on the computer? and -- can I program the sevice to process tasks only after the computer has been idle for a certain amount of time? I have all sorts of questions that can only be answered by someone who has installed BOINC as a service and who has had to deal with some of these issues.

In short - I've spent a great deal of my life building experience by doing things the hard way. I was too proud to listen to others who had already been there, and I made many mistakes along the way. My knowledge is real, but ... now, I'm old and worn out -- and I'm tired of making mistakes. I'm tired of the trial and error method, and I'm eager to listen to the advice of others.

So - if there is anyone out there who has run BOINC as a service and can give me a short list of do's and don't's -- I would love to hear from you.
Thanks :)

OK - it seems that a few people are looking at this thread -- but nobody is saying very much - except for dajeepster, and what he said was kinda funny. I went ahead and installed BOINC as a sevice on baddog002 (computer name), and I attached BAM. It was a little confusing, but there is help available. When I edited the default work preferences, I asked that BOINC do work between 0800 and 1200, assuming that those times are UTC. -- so ... 2400 - 0400 pacific standard time. I'm not sure what time zone the EDGeS@home beta website is located in. When I examined my account, it said that my computer had last communicated with it at 21:24:27 UTC. A task completed and was validated at that time. So ... that's ~1327 pst. I examind the task and the quorum is 1. If I understand that correctly, the computer completed a task after 1:30 pm pst. I guess that I don't fully understand BAM. I have checked everything and I thought that BOINC was supposed to run only between the hours of midnight and 4 in the morning, pst.

I would really enjoy hearing from someone who has more experience with BAM than I do.

Thanks. o_O

Thanks for responding, Peter. Have you run BOINC as a service? Do you use another account manager?

No, I do not run BOINC as a service. I do not run a BOINC-manager although I am looking into it. I run my farm from one console through a big KVM ... the "old" and léss than sophisticated way. OTOH: it works well ... and I am just now too lazy to change. ;)

Well, most of them are - except two. But those are set to crunch their projects forever - DPAD on one and seti and CPDN on the other.

OK - for you all who might be wondering. I kinda have this BAM thing figured out. BAM controls which projects are attached to a specific computer. However, regarding things like the time of day a computer crunches and whether or not it crunches while it is busy, the local preferences take precedent.
