I?m trying to backup a 20 gig laptop HD to a 80gig standard HD.

The laptop HD ? IBM Travelstar model: DJSA-220 20GB out of a Gateway solo.

Using a 40/44 pin converter I installed the laptop HD into my PC as well as the 80GB drive. During POST, it sees the Laptop HD. However, XP doesn?t see it. The 80GB drive no problem.

I booted from a floopy and ran fdisk just to see if it could see the laptop HD. It did.

Why want XP see it?

The OS on the laptop HD is 98.

go to Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management and click on Disc Management, and see if XP recognizes the HD there.

did you check the jumper for master/slave? If it is the only drive in the system, there is no need for a jumper. If there are more than one drive in the system check out the info on this web site: Hitachi

Yes, master, slave set accordingly on both drives. M=20GB S=80GB

Thanks

First time I've ever tried to do this. BIOS is set to auto detect, and it does detect it, i see it during POST.

If the drives are both on the same cable, then the 80GB should be Master. If it is a WD, then make sure it is set for Master with Slave present, NOT Master stand-alone. Some other drives besides WD have this quirk - the root of several of my hair-pulling sessions. Easier to set them both for Cable Select - master goes on end of 80-wire cable, slave on the middle connector.

Sounds like some good advice, I?ll give it a try. thanks.

It is a WD/SE 80GB. The 20GB Laptop HD didn?t have a jumper on it when I took it out. I?m sure I have a spare jumper around here some where.
That?s the only reason I set the WD up as the slave, other wise I would have set it up from the beginning having the WD 80 GIG as the master. I never would have thought about setting them up as cable select. I now have to tips to try.

Thanks Zepper

Ok, some progress. I can see the drive now under Admin Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management.

However, it doesn?t show up under my computer, so I still can?t back it up.

Just a reminder, I need to back it up as is, so I can restore if I need to.

What do I need to do to get it to show up under My Computer?

What is Convert to a Dynamic Disk?

Since the notebook drive has a primary partition on it, it may want to be seen as drive D. You may need to force the NB drive to be drive letters following whatever letters you have without the NB drive attached. You can do that in drive management. Or you may have to set it to inActive - Win doesn't like to have two Active (means bootable) primary partitions. You can then set it back to Active just before you move it back to the NB.
. Dynamic Disk allows Windows to adjust the size of (NTFS only, I think) partitions as needed (dynamically). That would make me mucho nervous...
. Another thought. Is a 20G drive of a size that works without any special help on a Gateway Solo? Just wondering if you used something like Ontrack Drive Manager to allow the whole drive to be seen. If you did, you'll have to run some utility in order for it to be seen. However, since it is seen as a FAT32 drive, then it's probably just the Active switch that needs to be disabled.
. Using xcopy (or XP's command-line equivalent - unless XP's Explorer can do that) you should be able to copy the whole drive. Here is the syntax I use: xcopy x:\*.* y:\? /S/E/C/I/Q/H/R/K/Y . Where x=the source drive and y:\? is the drive:\directory (folder) to save it in. I can use that in Safe Mode in W98SE to copy my whole C: drive to another directory.
. Remember not to back up the swap file - a waste of time.

Thanks for your help.

It turned out to be the GoBack software on her laptop. I disabled it, booted her laptop from a floopy, did dir on C drive and saw it all. Got it back in my other system and backing up as I type this. Your comments on the ontrack software got me thinking in a new direction, and that's what lead me to checking out the GoBack software. I've never used Goback software, had know idea what it did until now.

Thanks again,
