Hey Group

I'm right in the middle of upgrading my system and my new mobo (new Gigabyte P35) has a 4-pin 12vdc connector right next to the cpu, anyway, my PSU doesn't have a 4-pin 12vdc

connector but it has a 6-pin connector which colors match the 4-pin 12vdc connector:

4-pin 12vdc connector = 2 yellow wires & 2 black wires
6-pin 12vdc connector = 3 yellow wires & 3 black wires

so can I cut out a 4-pin 12vdc connector (leave the leads around 5" long) from another PSU and use them with my current PSU by cutting them and attaching the

4-pin 12vdc connector to the yellow/black leads via scotch-locks on the 6-pin 12vdc connectors? I guess what I am also asking: are the yellow and black leads always the same voltage on every PSU?

I hope I am getting this question across OK :) as I have a wonderful habit of knowing what I mean in my haed but losing it a lot when I type ;)

Thanks

What make/model power supply is this? The connector you're describing sounds like the PCI-Express power connector. Any supply with that should also have the 4-pin "ATX12V" (aka "P4") connector. And any supply old enough to actually not have the ATX12V connector is at risk to not be able to handle the 12 V current needs of your modern hardware.

But as a generality yes, PSU wires of the same color should carry the same voltage.

Thanks AL for your help. I did splice the smaller 12vdc connector to the existing PSU and my system booted :)

I'm formatting my new 500g SATA as we speak and by this time tomorrow I should be playing GRAW2 ;)

According to Newegg, your supply has an 8-pin "EPS" connector and an adapter for 4-pin motherboards. You could also have just used the 8-pin connector and let 4 of its pins hang off to the side, assuming nothing on the motherboard got in the way.

Yes, I saw the picture at Newegg and it does show the 4-pin connector, however, mine didn't
have it.

But thats OK, your info helped me out and I made the splice and everything is good again!!

I thought about using the 6 pin and the 8 pin but since I wasn't sure I felt it would be better
to do what I did...btw, the reason I missed the 12vdc plug after installing it in my case the

copper heatsink pipes on my heatsink/FAN hid the connector , I even looked for that connector and still didn't see it <sigh>

Btw, it seems to take freaking forever to format a 500g HDD :D
