OK heres the deal. I setup G6 a FTP server software program on a NT_4.0 machine. I opened up a port on my netgear RT314 router so I could get through. The way i have it setup the router gave the NT machine a IP address of 192.168.0.4 port 21, so to FTP from my other machine here at home Im typing in my @home IP address. I have a static IP address assigned and have it setup in the router configuaration. But I cant get logged in with FTP. I can how ever get logged in if i type in the 192.168.0.4 to the FTP server from my machine. But thats no good for people trying to log into my FTP server from the internet.

What im i going wrong! I created a user account and it all seems like its setup right. I had a friend trying to connect but he said it couldnt even connect and try to accept the account I created for him. But if i myself try it seems to connect but wont accept my login name and password. I use to have this working months ago just goofing off. But I dont know if it made a differance but I was using DHCP from my @ home server. But theres a problem with @ home DHCP so I had to put in a static IP address.

I hope you guys understand what Im saying :)

Thanks!

Two things
1. For outside users trying to FTP in, make sure you disabled the port filter in menu 21 for the FTP
2. The reason it doesnt work on the inside unless you use the private IP is because the routers loopback doesnt work, its normal

bouds, i will try that.

jmcoreymv,

<< For outside users trying to FTP in, make sure you disabled the port filter in menu 21 for the FTP >>

....what do you mean by this? Do this werea tthe FTP server or in router?

<< The reason it doesnt work on the inside unless you use the private IP is because the routers loopback doesnt work, its normal[Q/]
I dont get this? Your saying even if I type in my @home ip address 24.24.334.* it still wont let me get through? But others using my @home IP should beable to get in still. Its because Im behind the router?

BTW.. I posted this same topic in the Operating Systems too. I might have posted a better explanion about it.

Thanks guys!

You have to telnet into the router and goto menu 21.3 and look for the filter that blocks out incoming access to port 21, then set its Active = No. After that, as long as you have port 21 fowarded in SUA menu 15, to the client ip thats running the ftp, it should be available for outside users. From the inside if you type in your @home address, it will hit the router and try to ftp into the router because the router doesnt have a loopback. Its normal for most of the home routers I have used.

jmcoreymv,

Thanks I will try that. I have telnet into the router before. I will check into that and try changing it and see what happens.

substance12,

Got my FTP server working late last night. :) Im going to work on it tonight and start accounts and testing. I cant confirm just yet what my problem or problems were. I tried changing the options by telneting like jmcoreymv said to do. But afterwards it still wouldnt work. Then what I tried doing is in the SAT/NAT setting you have the first option and it says default port. I tried using it with out putting in the port 21 number in and just adding the IP? Before I was putting in my information starting on line 2 were you put both IP and Port number in and wouldnt work. I dont get it. I did reboot my PC so right now I dont know what actually fixed it or it may have been several things together. It was late and didnt have time to change settings and see what my problem was.

But jmcoreymv helped me with a few things i didnt understand till now :)

Also I never used serv-u but I like the G6 software. Its pretty cool. I'm not sure were to put the serial key code in at because Ive never had to. ;)
