Ok i ordered an opteron 165 and have installed it but now im haveing problems, Windows starts ok gets to windows welcome screen, but when i log in after about 5-10 seconds i get the BSOD or whatever blue screen of death and an error saying some crap, Now if i start in safe mode everythings ok can do whatever and it works fine. So im thinking something to do with drivers or something? The BSOD says something like try BIOS updates and or disable memory caching or something. Please help

Greaty apresheate it!

Try takeing out one of the sticks and restarting. If that does not work take out the other and restart (Put in the other one). Try a reformat and update bios might also work...

If it doesnt crash in safe mode, then I bet it's a driver issue rather than memory. You could always download memtest (it's a boot option on quite a few linux CDs) and run it to confirm your memory is good.

For instance, it's on the Knoppix CD:
You can D/L knoppix here.

BTW, Knoppix is a bootable CD that you can drop in your computer and it (usually) automatically loads a fully graphical linux distro.

Why not follow the advice the error gave your. Download winflash and the latest bios for your motherboard and put those things on a floppy disk (in safe mode).

Restart your computer and load your new BIOS. THEN adjust your BIOS to default settings.

You didn't explain everything you did. If you just popped in a new cpu and left the rest of your set-up alone, Windows should be fine (no clean install required). Though you should download the 2-core drivers.

If the BIOS update doesn't work, I would also guess memory.

CPUs can be finicky sometimes with how they play with memory etc..... Since the mem controller is on the chip. Good luck!

Ok got windows to start and got a "windows has just recoverd from a serious error" or whatever, I chose to send it, Page came up with some info saying the error is caused by a devide driver and that there is no solution. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you try a clean install of Windows? Is your RAM @ stable speeds? How many sticks of RAM do you have? Is your HSF properly seated? Did you install the Latest BIOS?
What Wattage is your PSU? What brand?

You are positive it is not the ram correct?

Booting into safe mode fine but getting a BSOD when booting normally is a very common symptom for bad ram. I'd download MEMTEST86 and run it for a few hours.

Ram is at stock speends. I have x2 512, HSF as far as i can tell is good, thow the opty idles at about 40-50 whitch worrys me a bit i have a zalman 120mm HSF dont remember the name when i did notice a little bit of discoloration on the heatsink when i had it off/cleaning also some other small marks that would not come off, CPU is perfictly clean and such thow. I have the second to last BIOS update, i have v19 now theres v20 i would update them but when i try and start the flash menu in safe mode i get a program error the program has encounterd a problem and needs to close bla bla bla.. My PSU is a sky hawk and is 520w.

Have you at least tried setting your BIOS to "Failsafe or Optimal" settings. If you do that, and you are still having issues....... then I think an updated BIOS and/or fresh install of windows is called for.... Sorry man.
