Anyone with a dell computer that needed to upgrade their power supply?

I called theier tech support and they said you need to get Dell's proprietary supply. I tried two atx supplies 250w and 300w (not dell) and they did not work.

Now the kicker: their tech support told me to call their spare parts department to buy one. BUT THEY DON"T HAVE A STRONGER POWER SUPPLY! THIS IS PISSING THE H%#$# out of me. FREAKING I HATE PHONE MENUS AND WAITING!!!

Just an idea, when you are calling the parts department, try asking about workstation power supplies, because you can really pack some hardware into those workstations

In some cases (pun hehehehe :) ) Dell has used PS's with proprietary connectors - so maybe you're stuck. But I've also heard that they use very good PS's. The wattage of the PS is perhaps not the best measure of its performance - this is why AMD has to have a "recommended PS" page for PS's that're compatible with their Athlons.

Dells aren't really meant to be significantly upgraded or overclocked. There's no reason for an OEM to do that.

well actually their connectors aren't proprietary, they're standard ATX. But I'm not overclocking....i'm adding a 2nd hard drive to along with a CD-ROM and CD-RW, so i don't think it's a significant upgrade....any other ideas?
