Need heatsink/fan setup for Xeon E5-2603 v3 CPU

So, i purchased ALL my parts for my newest server build, EXCEPT a heatsink. Doom on me.

So, looking for something simple and efficient. The server itself will be more memory and IO intensive than CPU.

The specific CPU i have is:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...tm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-Skimlinks

I have this build going into a Norco 3U chassis, with lots of memory and disk.

I have looked at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186093

Also some dynatrons.

I want something that will be easy to install. I do not want to hassle with scrapping of paste and applying my own.

Any recommendations?
Open to all ideas.

Much obliged.

I don't recommend the vertical ones in anything except 4U because the lid tends to be too close and leads to some form of the fan sucking the hot air back down on itself. This is especially true if your chassis doesn't have some form of true server cooling (which are fans normally running pretty loud both front and back to push pull air at a fairly high pace through the chassis at all times). Servers that are loud at idle aren't just poor programming, it's the fact that server mainboards normally have lots of passive components that need lots of airflow at all times, like passively cooled RAID cards and fiber interfaces. Keep with the east-west coolers for that kind of chassis rather than the north-south.

I was thinking the same thing...i really dont want a vertical heatsink so i was looking for something flat...

there was this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Dynatron-R30-Active-Coolers-Processor/dp/B00O8JLARQ

which appears to be flat...just dont want a big heatsink standing straight up. :)

One more question.

In regards to this CPU, the LGA2011-v3, how do i know if this is a narrow or square one?
Looking at the heatsinks, looks like this is important to know which one i have so i can buy the correct heatsnk.
Thanks,

Your mainboard decides that. Here's an article: http://www.servethehome.com/narrow-ilm-square-ilm-lga2011-heatsink-differences/

Gotcha

This is my board:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10SRL-F.cfm

I am thinking i have the narrow, since i have 8 DIMM slots....

sound right?
Kind of a pain finding a heatsink.

EDIT: Found one that may work:
http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-He...8&qid=1460778612&sr=1-1&keywords=SNK-P0050AP4

Only thing is looks like know pre-applied paste (im lazy)
and i need a quieter 92mm fan.

Thoughts on that one?
Thx

I was going to recommend the supermicro coolers because they are made for the board. But yes they are loud because they are designed for the supermicro chassis cooling, they push a lot of air at idle because the fan controller tells them to.

Serve the home reviews your board and identifies it as narrow, so any narrow cooler will work.

the freezer should work at half the price of the supermicro sink...

the super micro should use the standard mounting dimensions as normal board.
The 3U is also tall enough to fit the freezer fine.

i dont understand why u guys are telling him to use a stock supermicro sink when those itself require loud fans to push air though a wind duct.

Typically I recommend server parts for server systems. I can't find anywhere that states if the i11 supports narrow ILM boards. Very few coolers actually do, which is one of the main reasons enthusiasts/workstation overclockers/non-mission critical people go for the square ILM, they can use just about any 2011 cooler. If the OP wants another choice, supposedly the latest revision of the Noctua i4 supports narrow ILM setups.

bah.. ur 100% correct... i should of taken a better look at the sink and the board.

Also i found another big problem... sigh... i should really learn to look before i speak huh? :p

looks like u require a cooler which uses a bolt mechanism for retension.

The freezer does not, it uses push pins...

So the people in this thread that made u change coolers made a correct choice..

It's easy to make mistakes on these things. It's one of the main reasons I hate speccing out servers, unless you just pay the vendor to do it, it seems like there's always some gotcha to the build. A+B is compatable, but A+C requires D to make A+C but with only half the features of A functioning. That's a nice 700$ card you bought there but you still need a 15$ cable to make it work.

It's exhausting.
