hi, im building a work computer for my home office (separate from my gaming rig) and need an opinion on what's a good QUIET hard drive out there to use.

ive read about flash hybrid drives and whatnot, but dont know anything about them as all ive ever researched are hi-cap and fast drives; not really things that are efficient or quiet

samsung spinpoint? something else?

thanks in advance

If you don't wish to spend a fortune, and performance isn't a top priority, I'd suggest the WD Green Power series. SPCR reviewed the 750GB model and had the following to say, 'The quietest desktop drive we've tested, the Green Power is actually a 5400RPM model. Idle and seek noise are lower than any other 3.5", including the famous Barracuda IV. Vibration is also very low, the lowest of all current 3.5" drives. Performance is not quite the equal of 7200 RPM drives, but the high areal density helps. With one less platter, the 500GB version is probably even quieter; with one more, the terabyte model might be a touch louder.'

So the 500GB model could possibly be the best bet. SPCR has tested other WD and Samsung Spinpoint models and have a recommended list on their site, you should take a look.

Samsung F1s are nicer ;)

But shorter in warranty :(

And yeah, silence would likely give the nod to the WD, though i'd prefer an F1 that's a tiny bit louder but certainly faster.

If you are putting all your work data on that disk, I would highly recommend doing a RAID 1 setup. Personally I would use a Seagate 11 series. Might be a little louder than the WD (7200 RPM vs 5400), but Seagate puts their money where their mouth is in terms of the warranty. Reliability is more important than anything else for a work environment. Last think you want is a disk failure and lose all your data for you and your clients.

Why do you say the Spinpoint F1 is nicer? Is it faster or quieter?
I'm going to buy a new drive and I'm looking into the 1TB/750GB Spinpoint F1 or the WD Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS.

What is the quietest hard drive series?
