Need hardware suggestions for my PC build

Another user told me to fill this out and get some ideas from you guys. I'm not looking to run a nuclear power plant but I also dont want something that's half assed. I have a lappy with a 250gb hard drive and I have never come close to filling it. Maybe that will change if I download more movies and stuff since I'd like to use it to watch vids on my tv. Just saying this because I dont think I need 1tb of storage. If I'm leaving anything out, which I probably am, just let me know and i'll post a reply.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

I will be using it for gaming, some video editing, and since the PC will be near my home theater maybe have it run as a HTPC. Would like HDMI out and blu-ray. But blu ray isnt a deal breaker as I have my PS3.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

I would like to keep it under $1000 including a display.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Good ol USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

I have always been an AMD guy.....dont know why, just am. But I'm open to Intel. Everything else is fair game.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

No parts to use.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Read a few, just more confused now.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

No overclocking for me.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

Not sure really, guess it depends on what size display I get, right? I would like a 22 inch display.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

As soon as I feel good about a plan.

I have win7 on the laptop. I will use the key and cd on the PC. I will upgrade to a 64bit edition when I do. And I will just reinstall vista on the lappy

If Sandybridge is going to be sold at MSRP and not price gouged, you're probably looking at an i5-2500k paired with a mobo (~370 for both).

A 22" monitor usually runs at 1080p, so a deal on a 5870 would be your best performer at its price range (~200). Otherwise a GTX 460 or 470 would also be good picks, depending on how much eye candy you want.

For a case, Antec 300 hands down.

4GB of DDR3 1333 1.5v. G.Skill is probably the most popular maker fitting those requirements. Corsair tends to run at 1.65v.

Samsung F3 1TB for primary HDD and maybe an SSD (60 GB Corsair Force or OCX Vertex 2 or G.Skill PP. All SF1200 controlled.

DVD burner about $20. Use your PS3 for BR

Without the SSD and a price cap of about 220 on the graphics, this should give you about 200 for a monitor

I'd post links but I'm typing this from my iPod....

EDIT: Also, get 1TB cause you can never have too much storage, and you won't be saving drastic amounts of money by getting less.

okay well i would say first off set aside 400 for the i5-2500 and P67 motherboard (you dont really need a 2500K as you wont be using IGP)

Case : Antec three hundred black
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129042

PSU : Antec EarthWatts EA650
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371015

HDD : SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185

RAM : G.SKILL NS 4GB

GPU : PNY GeForce GTX 460

DVD : SAMSUNG
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151192

Monitor: Acer G235HAbd 23'' 5ms 1920x1080 WideScreen LCD
http://www.newegg.com/Shopping/Shopp...82E16824009266

Total: 996.89 (estimated depending on CPU and motherboard)

This is without combo's or special deals so you can get cheaper if you look around.

Hope it helps.

And if you can find a 5850 for $200 go for that but i didnt look too hard.

I was thinking of going that route, but without Sandy Bridge motherboard and processor prices yet i didn't feel i should limit him too badly with other parts. That's why i went with a $400 wiggle room. If he gets a cheaper mobo/cpu combo (like 300) then i would go with the 5870 and possibly a better monitor.

At $200, you'd be dumb not to jump on it if you need a GPU. If Sandybridge does end up being price gouged, the i5-760 is still a fantastic gaming processor...

$325 might be optimistic on for a Sandy Bridge CPU and mobo (mostly mobo) on or near launch day, but I like the overall plan.

OP, this or mnewsham's build would be the way to go, it just depends on how exactly the pricing works out.

so the sandy bridge came out. i got it in my cart at microcenter, along with an open box antec 300 for 325 shipped after tax. What mobo do you recommend?

The open box antec is 35 bucks and the sandy is 249 (the i7 2600)

Gigabyte ud4 or ud3 both are fine.

I'm not impressed with the build quality lately of the Antec cases. I LIKE the Coolermaster HAF line of cases. I just built a new rig with the HAF 932.

I just got a 300 and I love it... very sturdy. Of course, the HAF series will be better due simply to price.
