Hey guys, long time lurker, new poster. I have a dilema, to most of you it will sound weak. Now I have built about 2 or 3 computers in the past months but I am god damn retarded. My buddy has this Dell 4400 which I have next to me right now and I am upgrading from a 40GB Maxtor stock drive to a Samsung Spinpoint 120GB drive. Now I have no clue what to do, took the old one out, put this in, attached the IDE and power cables, should the pin be set to master, I think it should because no other drive will be used in conjunction with this. I start up the system, boot something error, what is the step I shall do to get this thing working, how do I go about formatting it. The BIOS sees the drive, but I cannot boot on it, was about to load windows XP but said there was no drive found. Please guys, your help would mostly be appreciated and sorry for this stupid question, but I need to learn somewhere.

Try inserting the Windows XP CD and make sure that the BIOS is setup to boot from CD... that should do it, then you can get into the install and format the drive, partition, and setup XP...

something else u can try. If that 40gb drive has the os on it...put both drives in the system (one on each controller) and use the maxtor utility disk maxblaster...it will format the new dirve for you and also give you the option to copy the image from the other drive over to it. If you dont have maxblaster you can download it from maxtor.
