need harddrive diagnostic

i tried using Maxtor's Powermax 4.31, but the diagnostics never completed the job... i.e. it sat on the test screen when i tried to use it. do you guys know of any adequate-to-good harddrive diagnostic app i can use?
 
DFT (Drive Fitness Test) is a fairly decent freeware one...it was put out by Hitachi a while back and they update it fairly regularly.
