I'm looking for a good 17" monitor with DVI support and ~16ms preferably. Is the Sony SDM-S74 good? Or can I save some money and get the S73 which lacks DVI instead. Is the difference of not having DVI with this monitor noticeable. $380 is pretty much the limit but the lower the better.

Some people will tell you that DVI makes all the difference in the world. I personally cannot tell the difference.

DVI is supposed to be for really large screens where clarity might become an issue. 17" and 19" monitors probably don't matter.

The best thing to do is to buy the DVI monitor from a store with a good return policy, test out the VGA vs. DVI for yourself and decide whether paying extra for DVI is really worth it. Good luck!

I personally don't know if you'd be able to tell the difference. I've tried vga and dvi on my sony hs94p 19" and cannot tell a difference.

Well, my laptop's LCD is ok... It's a Dell Inspiron 8100 but has pretty bad ghosting. You think the S73 will be a big improvement in my eyes. Anything better than this piece of junk. lol. Also, anyone know if laptop screens are connected by VGA or DVI or some other type of connection inside the computer.

Does anyone have the S73?

oh, nice I found the LG L1710SK. I hear PC World ranked it #1, better than the Samsung 172x. So I'm assuming it's better than the S74? Does anyone have it and can comment about it?

EDIT: Oh, damn, C|Net gave it a 6.7 out if 10. Ouch. They said it washed out certain colors.

C'mon people. Help me out here. I need a good 17" (maybe 19" if cheap) monitor under $400. Preferably much less. I have looked at the Dell UltraSharp 1704FPV, The Sony S73 and S74, and the LG L1710SK. I don't want any ghosting and want very good image quality. DVI would be nice.

There's a good BenQ on newegg for like $369 (after $20 rebate). I've heard a lot of good things about it. It's a 19" LCD with 16ms response time. Looks pretty good and is probably gunna be my next purchase. Just look on newegg for a BenQ 19" with DVI, you shouldnt have too much trouble finding it.

The only problem with that one is that I have to buy a DVI cable, which adds almost $20 to the price. That LG for ~$285 sounds very good but it lacks the DVI. C|Net only gave it a 6.7/10. Does anyone have this monitor and can comment on it. Please. Under $350 is more like it. What about the Dell 1704FPV. 25ms sounds kinda high though. Does anyone experience ghosting with this one?

I have a Dell 2001fp and a Samsung 213T and DVI does make a big difference in clarity. Even on the 1800fp I upgraded from, i could tell the VGA wasn't as sharp.

Even if you do have to buy a DVI cable, i still think it's a pretty good deal, especially because of the MIR.

I don't know exactly what you are looking for other than the DVI input. I have a Planar 19M I bought a couple of years ago and it has been great. They are really dropping in price. I have bought 4 LCD monitors recently from eCost. I always look on the bargain page. Right now they have a 19" Princeton for$299 after the rebates (and the Princeton rebates have always come, just follow the directions exactly!) that I also bought in October for a lot more. It has a very high brightness spec and for the brief time I used it before selling it, it looked great. Also had the DVI input. Keep your eye out there if you don't get this email in time. Let me know what you decide.

Well, that Princeton is only 6-bit color as opposed to 8-bit as mentioned in another thread. The Planar seems nice, but I rather stay away from rebates and they take forever to get processed and I don't want to shell out $400 (before rebates) for a monitor at the moment. Under $350 would be much better. The Dell looks nice but I'm worried about the 25ms response time.

OK. This looks really good. A Samsung 710N-2 for $295 + $5 shipping. $300. No DVI but I hear picture quality is amazing already. Will I have to pay tax when ordering from Newegg and Zipzoomfly. I live in NY.

I wouldn't touch an LCD without DVI. The difference in sharpness, to me, was VERY noticable.

My suggestion is underappreciated Dell. I picked up one of their UltraSharp models recently, and have been extremely impressed with it. Good prices too. I wouldn't touch Dell's systems with a Ten Foot Pole, but their Monitors can hang with the best.

It even had 4 USB ports built right in - even more convenient than the front access on my case for my flash drive.

Does anyone have the 710n? The 12ms response time on it sounds very tempting. Can you please comment on it? Also, Insomniak, which Dell is that? The 1704FPV?

O.K. How about this:
The Samsung 710n or the LG L1710BK. The Samsung has 12ms response time but no DVI. The LG has 16ms response time but does have DVI. There's about $10 difference between them. I just can't decide between them. Are they good monitors and which do you suggest I get?

I also found a Dell Ultrasharp 1704FPT for ~$280 on Ebay. The person has 100% feedback and claims he has 18 to sell, all in the box and never used. But I don't know of whether I can trust him. The monitor has 13ms response time. EDIT: Wow, this guy is charging $49 for shipping and $10 for insurance (required).

Just someone please help me decide. If you own any of the above mentioned monitors, please respond.

A friend of mine recently picked up the 710N for Christmas.

I haven't seen it yet, but said friend has been extremely happy with it. IIRC, it also got a pretty favorable review at Tom's not long ago in some 17" LCD shootout or something like that.

I'll probably end up going with the Samsung 710N-2. Tom's Hardware ranked the 710T as the best overall 17" LCD. It's basically the same thing as the 710N except it has DVI, correct? At its native resolution and with some tweaking using the included software, I should be able to get it to some darn good picture quality even though it lacks DVI. On top of that, it comes with a $30 rebate. So it comes out to $265 which is a pretty damn good price if you ask me.
