Need general advice

I recently got hold of my own domain name - I want to use it for personal/family emails.

Should I build a small email server for here (preferred as I'd like full control) and if so, what specs would people recommend.

I'm also building a NAS/file server, would it be okay (from a security POV) to merge the two?

I know that I'd need to set up a Dynamic DNS thingee

For email, you want something that is always on with a good Internet connection. Try Amazon EC2 (they have a data center in Tokyo), you'll get full root access just like you would on a machine at home.

Though really, you shouldn't be running your own email unless you just want to learn how. Sign your domain up for Google Apps and you'll be able to use the Gmail interface for your own domain.

setting up good email server isnt all that easy, you'll have to mess with DNS MX PTR CName (A) records, from a learning standpoint it will be a great experience if you are trying to learn. However if u do decide to host your own, remember the email server will have to be on 24/7 with any down time leading to possible missed emails. Considering it sounds like you don't have a Static IP from your ISP it sounds like you will be having fun with DNS records considering you will be using a 3rd party to convert your Dynamic IP to Static.

As far as combing both NAS and EMAIL it would be fine just make sure you are behind a good firewall <----this is important.

Well after seeing this, I'm playing with the google apps. I'll probably mess about with an internal mail server just to learn with.

After reading all that... I'll just stick with Outlook and my sucky ATT email account.
