Need for Speed Underground 2: Slowdown problem

Anyone else having this prob? Half the time when I start up Need for Speed Underground 2, the 3D part is slow for some unkown reason... My hardware is up to par, and it worked fine the first time I played it, and right after I put new drivers on. Then, I Alt + Tabbed back to windows, and when I got back to the game, the video was running at like 3 FPS (as opposed to about 60). So I closed the game, restarted it... and what do you know, it's STILL at about 3 FPS! I really really don't want to reinstall my vid drivers again (let alone every time I play...), so anyone had this problem / know how to get around it?

Oh, duh... here they are:

Radeon 9700 Pro
3.0 Ghz P4
1 Gb pc3200 ram (in dual channel)
30 Gb HD space (out of 80 overall)

...after rereading your post, I would recommend backup up your save games and reinstalling. Please report back and let us know....
