Need For Speed: PU problem

I just bought an MS Sidewinder Wheel(it was $5, I couldnt pass it up) and I came home and reinstalled Need For Speed: PU all excited and ready to play. Then, as I went into settings to try and get my controls and all configured properly the game slowed to a near halt. I cant figure out what this is. it was when i clicked on the controller tab that it slowed down. Is there a patch for the game to work with my wheel? Is there a patch for the drivers for the wheel? Im using the drivers that XP has already installed on it.
thanks,

I had this problem with NFS5 when I connected a Logitech wheel to my wife/son's computer. Somehow I got it to clear up but it was sometime ago and now I can't quit remember what I did. I'll think about it some more and if I remember I'll get back to you.

In the meantime, is this wheel pluged into USB or Game Port? If you have any other controllers plugged in unplug everything except the wheel and then try it.

Hey dude. I'm using the old gameport MS FF Wheel on XP Pro and NFS5 with no problems. I'm assuming you chose the Microsoft SideWinder auto-detect driver in XP. The only advice I have is to patch the game, if you haven't done so already. Click on Multiplayer and it'll automatically check for updates. I really wish EA would release the download instead of having to go through their update utility.

Did you get SideWinder Game Controller 4.0 with the wheel by any chance? I'd like to see if I can change some of the force settings of the wheel, but it's not available for download from MS for some odd reason.
