need for high RPM Harddrive?

How can I benefit from a High RPM hard drive? 7200 and 10000 rpm. Would I use it for storage or use a my existing 80gb.

What do you use your computer for? It won't speed up downloads or web surfing, for example.

Games would load quicker, and anytime the game accesses the drive would be quicker. It all depends on how often your drive is in use when your gaming. What are your other specs?

I am researching a new system. I currently have:


abit th711 raid
1.9 intel
512 rambus 800hz
80 gb western dig.
msi ti4400
tdk burner
viewsonic a70
win xp pro

a motherboard\CPU\RAM\video upgrade would do more than a faster hard drive for gaming.

Intel example:
Abit IC7 (Intel 875 chipset)- $119
P4 3.0C (retail) - $220
1GB Corsair XMS PC3200 - $285.00
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro - $210.50
Total: $834.50


AMD example:
Asus K8V - $109
Athlon64 3000+ (retail) - $223
1GB Corsair XMS PC3200 - $285.00
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro - $210.50
Total:$827.50

I'd hold off on the video card for now though because ATI and Nvidia are or have released new cards which will affect pricing greatly.

The only truly affordable high RPM (IMO, 7200RPM is mainstream and 10,000RPM is 'high') hard drive is the Western Digital Raptor. You'd need a Serial ATA card to use it, and it only comes in 36 and 74GB sizes ($112.50, $219 respectively). It's fast (even faster with two in a RAID0), but for gaming it won't mean smoother gameplay.

Hard drives have to do with level loading times, after all the information is cached to the memory there is no need to use the hard drive over again. For the more budget minded person (such as myself) I would much rather buy smoother gameplay instead of a few seconds load time.

I love my Raptor, but it won't make any difference when the game is loaded. Far Cry loads quite a bit faster though.

I would personally save your money and get a nice 7200 rpm drive with a new cpu/mobo like somebody posted above.
