sounds like with the ASUS mobo, you failed "BIOS update 101: USB Flash drives and you"

How can you flash the BIOS if the mobo doesn't recognize the CPU? Wouldn't it fail to POST, thus preventing you from accessing BIOS? Or am I mistaken here?

Nope, absolutely true. Funny, though, some people claim they can magically update BIOS using only a flash drive and a lifeless PC.

My asus p5e mobo said "unknown processor detected" but still posted, then I went into the bios, flashed it, and upon reboot, the e8400 was detected normally.

It's really not that hard, but some people experience PEBKAC

I do not own any other lga775 CPUs, as my last rig is a socket 478. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. I must be really good at magic...

if the mobo totally fails to post, it could indicate a problem with RAM compatibility (if the RAM is unstable at stock voltage, i.e. it requires something like 2.2V+), not necessarily the cpu.

Please note that "I went into the bios" is the keyword here. We are talking about a completely dead system where the mainboard does not POST (read you cannot get into the bios). In your case it was a matter of simply upgrading the bios in our - getting lower end cpu or exchanging the board.
