Saw a computer advertised on TV...

As See On TV PC

Wondering if it is, in fact as they say, "faster then Intel Pentium 3 Processor."

Anyone? Comments on this product?

Thanks

in terms of speed, the p3 at 1ghz is a little faster in certain tasks but its also twice as expensive as teh amd.

The amd ofcourse requires certian components taht are certifed like powersuppply, memory. Also drivers have to be installed right for the maximum performance.

However that is a prebuilt one from (micron I think) should be good.
Its worth the price I think, especially for someone who doesnt want to self tech support.

Edit;
On closer look you might want someone elses opinion. The video card is very very weak, its a few years old. However otherwise it seems fine.

The harddrive and (as said above) memory card leave a bit to be desired. See if you can shop around and find an ata drive that's 7200rpm as opposed to 5400...you'll notice the difference. Also, you MIGHT be able to find a system with 256mb of 133mhz SDRAM for that price, but not sure.

I have a 1ghz system (albeit self-built and highly piecemeal) that I'm in love with. Definitely a good chip, but takes a bit more effort to setup correctly than a pentium. However, (also like said above) since what you're looking at is all pre-built then you should be good to go.

Intel's 1ghz is about $235, while AMD's 1ghz is about $166. How is this double again? 166x2 = 332 right?

Just wanting to make sure we're not using 'fuzzy' math here.

Both the Intel and AMD processors are really about equal in speed, and while they're both excellent they only real difference is the amount of heat they produce and the price is off by about $70.

The Intel is a bit easier to cool than the AMD processor, but you can probably overclock the AMD processor a bit more easily and it's probably just about as reliable as the Intel as well.

So my summary is yes, the AMD processor is a great chip and is well worth the money.

Thanks guys...I really appreciate the input. Overall, I think it's a good system but I'm not a techie like most here and, while I can run just about any program...I don't know or understand squat bout the innerds and such.

ONE MORE THING PLEASE...

Can you take a peek at the "Conversa Web" feature that is about mid-way down the page under "Voice Recognition?" Any thoughts/comments?

Thanks again:)

I wouldn't put much hope on voice recognition features as they stand today. :)

Expect to correct 1 word out of 10 if you are lucky.

i havent been paying attention to prices of cpus for a while, it was a ball park estimate.
As for conversa software, I must say no software is fool proof, you need to train it but once trained it should do ok. You got to speak slowly for it to recognise.

ONE MORE THANG...

Can you 'splain "overclock" and how to correct any cooling problems?

Last question I swear.
Thanks:)

The "presentation" on the "conversa Web" states that it's NOT a voice recognition...i.e., no "training" involved. While I don't know the particulars exactly, it seems to be different.

Ugh.... awful deal.

You can get a 1Ghz system from a company like Micron for about the same price. Taking a quick look, you'd get more RAM, a faster hard drive (7200RPM), a CD-RW (much more useful than DVD), 32MB GeForce2 Video, and an established company backing the product. None of that MSN rebate BS either.

I heard a GREAT anology from a customer of mine, it needs polished, but you will get the idea.

This is a car analogy.

Intel Pentium III = Honda Prelude, Fast, reliable

AMD Athlon = Jaguar, not slow, but will spend more time in the shop.

Cost is not judged in this example.

I wish Intel made an Athlon chipset, then I would jump all over it. I just hate all the dumbass drivers and patches needed for Via chipsets. :|

The monitor isn't too duckin' fusty either. I would look around here and I'm sure you could get something better for a comparable price from some of the members here. Russ or Red Dawn are two that come to mind but I'm sure there are a few others.

SuperSix - your analogy is completely wrong. it's more like:

Pentium 3 = Honda Prelude/Mitsu Eclipse
Athlon = Ford Mustang/Chevy Camaro

one gets things done with finesse and efficiency, and the other gets it done by brute force. they both get you there, but there is a substantial price difference.

It's not COMPLETELY worng, or you wouldn't simply be changing the vehcles. Like I said, it needs polish, but the idea carries through.

I don't think the price is good for what you get on that system. Without the MSN rebate (you DON'T want to do that) that system costs what? 1300? My system cost a little more than that 5 or 6 months ago and it is much better than that. I may only have an 800 instead of a gig but the faster harddrive, better graphics card, and cd-rw more than make up that in functionality. I say don't go for it.
