Unless he needs/wants HDMI.

Honestly I don't understand why people make such a big deal about budget receivers not having HDMI. Of course it doesn't have HDMI, it's $110 :p
Even if it did have HDMI, it would probably only have 2 inputs and all it would be doing was video switching.

It also doesn't have pre-outs, video upconversion, 7.1, and a bunch of other features that of course didn't make it onto a $110 receiver in 2007 ;)

At this pricepoint, I think your best options are the Pioneer or the Onkyo 304 that can be found for right around the same price at times. They both have a similar features set.

For this price, I think you're getting really good bang for the buck with products like these and if you're trying to get a budget system together, it gives you the option to put more of the budget into the components that matter a lot more, the speakers.

Are you replacing a current receiver, or is this the start of a new system?

If he's hooking up a newer 42" HDTV it would be an issue. Not so if he's using a 27" CRT.

Your points are quite valid though. My point is we don't have enough info about his components.

A receiver at this price point or a bit higher that has HDMI won't do anything with the sound from it. All it would serve as is to expand the total amount of HDMI inputs to his television...nothing more.

It still wouldn't be an issue if you're running the HDMI cables directly into the TV and just bypassing the receiver altogether. A budget receiver is really meant for sound only, not video switching/processing. At $110, the Pioneer is a good choice.

You're right that we don't have the full picture, but based on the information of Movies and CDs, I was thinking that we weren't talking about a whole slew of HDMI sources to be switched. If he already has his sources hooked up though, he probably has enough connectivity on his display alone to handle all the sources adequately.

I was picturing this as mainly a sound upgrade to whatever he has now... whether it be the integrated TV speakers or a basic sound system that likely has even less connectivity than a budget receiver like this.

Thanks for the input everyone. I have a Samsung - 32" 720p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV. I have a Poineer 5 Disc DVD player. No receiver, this would be a new setup , not worried about HDMI. I just want to be able to have a little souround sound for movies and play some CD's via the DVD player.

It'll do you fine. I myself haven't made the switch to a HDMI receiver, want to but can't just yet. I still use a budget 5.1 receiver for my audio. Like was mentioned before, you could always spare that extra cash saved on the receiver for a nicer set of speakers. Maybe a bigger sub for more boom in your explosions.

Lothar1974, I think your going to like your new surround system. It makes watching a lot more fun. I bought one of these receivers after a little hesitation at first. I noticed they were almost out of stock at my two closest stores. I figured I'd be a fool not to for $110. The wife on the other hand is extremely conscious about all the cables (all of the time). No HDMI on this one. I asked BB if I bought this Sony STRDG510 before BF could I pricematch during the sale. Mgr. laughed and politely declined and said that BF was kind of sacred. One of the competitors said they would though. We'll see.

just go return it outright then and then rebuy it if they won't help you out.
