well... assuming that you have the modem plugged into the router's "internet", "in", or "uplink" port, and you just have a run of the mill consumer "router", enabling DHCP on your computers should be all that's required for you to stop getting same IP address error messages.

Also, most home Routers (Linksys included) use 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1.

I tried plugging in the modem to the internet in, but then I cant access the internet at all. weird?

plug one directly into the router and configure the router's IP address to something different.

the dsl modem goes to my router (but not to the internet hook up) then my comp is also connected to the router

the weird thing is if I hook up the dsl modem to the internet hookup of my router it wont work

the modem is speedstream 5100, and the router is netgear

How did you previously get into the router admin page? It would make sense to me that if you were previously able to get to the router admin page by typing 192.168.0.1, then you should be able to get there again by disconnected the modem.

What DSL provider do you have? Is your router one that's able to connect/authenticate to a DSL modem?

You might also gain a lot more knowledge about the topic by visiting http://www.broadbandreports.com. They've got forums for just about every type of hardware, and every ISP, and there's help for just about anything you can think of over there.

have to change the settings inside the modem, from ppp from computer to pppoe i believe. the support page on netgear site will explain it. =)

1 Disconnect the router from your network, and connect the computer directly to the SpeedStream modem
2 Open an Internet browser.
3 Type 192.168.0.1 in the browser address field and click Enter. The modem displays a configuration menu.
4 Click Advanced.
5 Enter the "Access Code" printed on the bottom of the modem.
6 Click PPP Location. The PPP Location screen appears.
7 Select Bridged Mode (PPPoE is Not Used).
8 Click Save Changes.
9 Connect the router between the computer and the modem.
10 Power off the modem.
11 Power off the computer.
12 Connect the Internet port of the NETGEAR router to the Ethernet port of the modem.
13 Connect the computer to a LAN port on the NETGEAR router.
14 Power on the modem and wait for 2 minutes. Don't go to the next step until this is finished.
15 Power on the router and wait for 1 minute. Don't go to the next step until this is finished.
16 Power on the computer.
