NEED DISK RECOVERY HELP BADLY

So I decided I wanted to install Gentoo Linux. Everything goes good, I get to the partitioner. As I already have a Linux parition (I dual boot with Ubuntu) I instructed it to reformat the linux partition. However, it threw an install error, and now it looks like my partition table is fvucked (the partition that contained my personal documents and my windows installation is now one huge "unknown" partition). I'm pretty sure the data is still intact (the installer wasn't active long enough to do much to the disk) I've been screweing with the Ultimate Boot CD, but FreeDos doesn't boot correctly on my comp for some odd reason (Invalid Opcode after InitDisk). I have a backup, but it's old and there's vital data that I need to recover university based stuff).

Is there any tool that could recover my data? I have an external USB 2.0 HD that could easily hold my entire HD.

I imagine your other partition is windows?

Just put in your windows disk and run chkdsk /fixmbr

My original partition table was as follows:

1. Acer proprietary backup parition (for restoring factory settings) FAT32
2. My Windows/Application storage partition NTFS
3. My Personal Docs FAT32
4. My Linux Partition EXT3
5. Linux Swap

I used Grub Bootloader (now throws Error code 17 on bootup, working from a Knoppix live CD now)

Parittions 1-3 cannot be recognized (all under one parition of "unkown" type)

My beef with fixMBR is that if the partition table is fvcked and not the MBR, won't it just fvck up the MBR more?

K, I'll give it a shot.. Thx

Don't you have any back solution in place, for your Windows data?

I always backup my data. Maybe you should look into this too.
