I have a few cavities and I desperately need a cleaning, but I have no insurance.

I've called a few places around here and they all want to set up some new patient meetings which will cost $100+. I can see these places getting expensive fast.

Any tips for finding the cheapest way to get my teeth fixed?

all the dental insurance i've seen that you can buy on your own sucks. i think you'll have to pay up or have rotten teeth.

I'm fine with going to a dentist and paying. I'm just looking for the best way to identify a cheap dentist.

Call around to several in your area and ask them for a rough estimate of costs. Some will refuse to do that, but others will do it.

I don't think there is one. Call them and ask, see if they have a web site with rates, or ask people you know for recommendations.

You might consider asking the ones that aren't in flashy newer buildings. My wife was in the dental field, and usually your older places have everything paid for and are mostly past the debt portion of running a dental practice. You may even ask if they have a cash price as some may work with you and provide a decent rate if you have no insurance.

Her boss (the dentist) wasn't one who did that, but they did direct customers to cheaper options (if I recall) when a person did not have dental insurance.

dental insurance is pretty worthless anyway

I pay less than $20 a month for myself and spouse (basically $10 per person) and our 2x per year cleanings are covered and 80% of anything else. Its a pretty good trade off considering if we only go once for a cleaning in the year it covers the yearly cost.

yeah, but is that something you bought on your own or is it through your employer?(or hers)

If you go to any of those chain dental places watch out for a treatment counselor. They push hard all the expensive unnecessary stuff so the actual dentist doesn't have to. The chain places should have exams for ~$50. If you have to have a cleaning before work, local colleges with dental tech programs should have them for free or low cost (~$10-20).

It's worth it if it's subsidized by your employer. My wife gets hers for free, and mine is about $6/month. We get 2 cleanings per year and X-rays for free. Paying for just one cleaning out of pocket would be as much or more than we pay in premiums for the whole year.

Through employer, however Kev's post didn't specify and just generalized Dental Insurance, so I'm not sure why this would make a difference.

Because $20/month isn't the real price, your employer might be paying another $50-100/month above that. In other words Leros can't get insurance for anything close to that price.

Did you go to dental school? I don't imagine you'll get work as a dentist if you have no experience... and you only need insurance if you decide to open up your own practice. :sneaky:
