Maybe I should just get the Visa now and then pick up the Discover later, maybe after I graduate or something.

Like I said above, if you can control your spending, get both. As for the security, to me it is a non-issue. At most you are liable for $50 and that is if the CC company decides you didn't do much to stop the theft. So to me, I wouldn't use that as a major deciding factor.

If you do decide to get both, go for the Discover first, then once you get it (or are denied) then apply for the visa - it will be easier to get them if you do that.
