ok on tuesday im finishing my Rig and ive been going at this for days to find the best cpu for gaming. at first i was going to get a phenom 955 C3 then i read that the i5 is better but wont be getting 6core

so the last option is i7 920 but its pricey and i just cant afford it. Is going to 1156 i5 way the wrong way to go?

What i was going to order Tuesday
MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156 Intel P55
Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB

What i have now
antec 300
samsung spinpoint F3 500GB
NEC 23" IPS EA231WMi 1920x1080
ratpadz gs + logitech MX518
Sidwinder keyboard
750watt corsair TX
windows 7 64bit OEM

just go with the i5 750 and 1156 platform. that cpu is fast and overclocks pretty good too. if you are buying this for gaming that 6 core upgrade path should be of no real concern. by the time your i5 750 cant handle games well we will have already gone through a couple of cpu architecture changes and it will be time for a new platform anyway.

Go i5 if phenom and i5 are around the same price, if phenom is a lot cheaper then maybe consider it, it basically does as well as the i5 in gaming although isnt quite as good in everything else.

ive put 2 rigs together one phenom and one i5 both able to do crossfire/sli there is a 74 dollar difference between the 2

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P

$379.97
**************************

MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156 Intel P55
Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB

Subtotal: $453.97

Now here is the key i have a friend selling a Brand NEW in package i5 for 160 so with the i5 build it will be 413.97 wich will make it a 34 dollar difference

yeah just get the i5. if you look at most benchmarks the stock i5 matches or beats the fastest Phenom 2 X4. the i5 has way more oc potential and will give you the better overall performance for a longer period.

Wait, hold the phone. Usually the CPU comes in second when it comes to getting the most performance in games.

I seen a HUGE difference going from a 4870 to this 5870 - more than going from a Yorkfield 775lga C2Quad to this i7 920
