I am going to be building a new system in the next month, and need help deciding on a cpu. I will be pairing the cpu with an Abit or MSI KT133A. I want to run at 133Mhz FSB, and lower the clock multiplier on my cpu to get it to run at that. All I use the comp for is web, napster, and games. I will be cooling it with a FOP32-1. So, should I go with a Duron to save some money? or a T-Bird? Which speed should I get? I'd like to hit and stay pretty cool (leave comp on 24hrs) at 1Ghz with the CPU. What's your recommendation?

I dont think you will get a amd cpu to a FSB that high.
Highest ive heard of is 112fsb.

You will be able to get it to run at 133MHz if the motherboard is designed around the new KT133A or the AMD 760 chipsets. Other than that, if you want the machine to run cool, get a duron 700 and overclock it to 1.0, but you can get a 1.0GHz T-Bird now that will reliably hit 1.2GHz+ with reliable components and cooling.

Or you can leave it unoverclocked :Q

My plan would be to go with a Duron 800 or T-Bird 800, drop the multiplier to 7.5, and run it on 133FSB. This would yield 1Ghz. From what I've heard I'd have a better chance and stability with the Duron, but would only save $30. I will get the palomino when it comes out if it is much better and runs on the KT133A btw. What do you all think I should do?

You won't be able to get the FSB up that high just because the KT133 chipset is only meant to do 100mhz FSB. It's not the CPU that's holding you back, but the chipset.

Unless you need a new space heater, why not consider an Intel CPU?

Anything over 800MHz doesn't make any difference with Quake or business apps. You can have a nice, cool, reliable, Intel PC instead of a crispy-hot AMD system. No special memory, power supply, no extra fans ....

We have entered the realm of dimishing returns. My kid has a PII/450 and an GX2 MX card and he beats almost everyone he meets at Quake III Arena. I have an 800Mhz system overclocked and tweaked and he still whoops me. I could have 100GHz but fingertips, keyboards, and video cards can only move so fast.

Forget about speed and go for reliability.

Hey SeaFree my crispy-hot duron 600@969 will run rings around your 800 in most apps and it costs a heck of alot less than your Intel. Oh by the way I cant cook on a Duron that runs at 102F.

to keep the answer short.. yes you should be able to get a 100MHz FSB part lower the multiplier and then run it at 133MHz FSB on the KT133A. On the Duron vs Tbird matter.. with onlt $30 difference I'd go Tbird. Even if it might o/c less than a Duron, the Durons L2 is effectlively too small to effectively take advantage of speeds above 900MHz (that's what I've been told anyway)

I don't like intel, I could go into reasons, but I'm sure you all know them already. One of the main ones is that I can get a Duron CPU and mobo for the price of the P3 cpu alone. Does the L2 make a big difference in games? That's pretty much what I'll use it for. Thanks for all your replies so far.
