need CPU/mobo suggestions

I currently have 1.8 GHz cpu and an Albatron mobo. I want to upgrade to around a 3 GHz cpu and a mobo that supports 400 MHz RAM. Any suggestions?

Intel route - P4 3.0c 800 mhz, mobo - Abit IC7-Max3 (no parallel or serial port : ( )or Asus P4C800-E
AMD route - Athlon 64 3000+ mobo - not sure, or Athlon Mobile 2500+ or 2600+, mobo - Abit NF7-S rev.2 or Asus A7N8X

Cool. Thanks for the tips. Anyone else? Forgot to mention that A) I don't plan on doing any overclocking, and B) I don't need onboard audio (though maybe it's standard on all of them now).

Edit: I will mostly use the computer for gaming, though I will need to do some video and photo editing, as well. I don't really have a specific budget in mind, because I don't know how much I should expect to spend. I'll also have to buy the memory. I have the rest of the components I need.

What do you use the computer for ? That would help. And a budget, and what other parts you need.

I'd recommend an athlon 64 system. Some people would argue and argue... wait wait because the socket is going to change soon to 939 and support for dual channel ram. The cpu isn't that dependant on dual channel ram. A good motherboard that is under $100 for the athlon64 is the MSI Neo-FSR. You can get the Neo-FSR2 model if u want the firewire options but it is 25 dollars more than the first board I listed. I'm going to buy pc3500 ram and run it at 400mhz.. (under rating) and hopefully get a cas2 on the chips. Usually you can check out the motherboard manufacturers website and find that info out. You can get that athlon64 3000 processor, msi motherboard, and 1 gig of ram (2x512) for about 530 dollars.
