New games like Doom 3 are making my PC scream for mercy. I havent upgraded in 3 years so the old Athlon XP 1400, EP-8k7a, 256mf ti 4400 combo is showing its age BAD.

I've been checking out the CPU's reviews for Doom 3 and the Athlon 64 3000 seems like a bargain. What would be a good mb, ram and video card to combine with it?

Maybe something like:
Athlon64 3000+ - $175
eVGA GeForce 6800 - $283
Chaintech SK8T800 A64 Mobo - $64
Corsair Value Select 512MB PC-3200 DDR - $77
Total: $599

Kinda sacrificing on the mobo and RAM, but good CPU and graphics so it should be all good. All the items came from NewEgg. ;)

From NewEgg...

Athlon64 3000+ (retail) - $175
Chaintech VNF-250 (retail) - $82
2x Mushkin 512MB PC3200 - $154
MSI 9800pro 128MB 256bit - $193

that is $604. I think that is your best bet.

I still think that if you are going to play Doom 3 that the 6800 would suit you better. Look at the benchmarks and you'll see that anything 6800 is the clear leader. You could substitute the mobo I recommended with the $82 Chaintech VNF-250 because its a better board for a little more $$. :D

Sometimes you can get a deal on the 256MB 9800's and flash to XT. Still if you call yourself a true gamer better pony up for at least the 6800 Plain. And you do want a gig of ram.
