I've already got a desktop that's S1155 but the CPU is weak. Celeron G530 on a cheap gigabyte h61 board. I mainly surf the forums but want to get back into gaming. I don't play battlefield and honestly the only games I'll really play will be stuff that's available on consoles too.

I've got $300 to spend right now and was wondering if its realistic to get this done at 1080p with just dropping in a CPU and getting a video card for $300 total.

Your input will be appreciated, I have no CPU brand preference honestly and I do have a local micro center

An Ivy Bridge i3 and a 7950 would be a fantastic combination for your budget, though you can often get free motherboards in bundles from Microcenter. I'd check to see what kind of deals they have right now.

Is 1gb of vram going to be enough for 1080p now a days tho? I see that 3570k for $149.99 I'll probably go buy it tomorrow morning from micro center unless there's something else I should really consider getting

1GB of VRAM might be limiting but if the price is right, I'd go for it anyway. If you can get a 2GB model for very little more, it's worth it. I picked up a 7850 2GB for my wife a few months ago for $120 in the classifieds and I'd be surprised if you couldn't do better now.

Surpsingly enough, you cannot get a 2GB 7850 for less than $120 anymore.

Due to two reasons:
1) 7 series is no longer being produced, and it is being phased out
2) 90% of Radeon cards are sold out everywhere while the remaining 10% are either very low end, or extremely overpriced (close to or even higher than MSRP)
