I need quick counsel.

y son is a gamer and watches videos (streaming) from the Net via Broadband. He wants a new PC for Christmas and I decided to build one using semi-new and new parts. I am using a basic ANTEC case with good ventilation and have several Power Supplies ranging around 500W to 650W.

Now, what I have are two CPUs, a Q6600 and Q9450 (or Q9550, I just do not recall) both were purchased from Fry’s as combos but the ECS MB's are toast. As the Motherboards that came bundled with them are shot, I decided to purchase a new one and was waiting on another when the price was right…and I had the cash.

So, a few months ago I bought an EVGA e-7050.610i (GeForce 7050, nForce 610i) that uses DDR2 RAM to replace one of them and it still hasn’t been opened since I hadn't had the time or inclination to build a new one. But now that I just picked up two PNY GeForce 9800GT 1GB (XLR8 from Best Buy this week for $74 each that were mentioned in this forum) video cards AND I am considering doing them in SLI (??) but would need a new Motherboard for that as this one only has one PCIe slot.

I currently have some Ballistic RAM which I am told is DDR2 PC2-6400 and it is 1GB each in two pieces so I will need to purchase at least two-2GB RAM modules to get him going.

As I do not want to buy another CPU but want to maximize the better of the two in the best MB/video card combo that I can, what would you all recommend???

What CPU, in what MB (a new one at NewEgg or the one I already have) and what RAM should I get?

I know he will need at least 4GB but if I get a new MB that can take four pieces and has space for two PCIe video cards then he could have 6GB RAM if I can get a pair to work with the existing RAM. Heck, I think I even have a really good video card (RADEON 9850/70??) lying around too but seems that putting the two 9800GT’s together might make his day…

Anyway, your opinions are appreciated.

So I either go with:

A. The EVGA MB I have and only use one video card; OR
B. Go ahead and buy a new MB that will allow two video cards AND allow for four pieces of RAM; OR
C. A totally different alternative that you all suggest????

I am ready to some spend money (around $200 more, OR return the one video card and spend $275) to buy a new MB (around $110 or so) and new RAM ($80??) but want him to have pretty good and stable GAMING PC that will keep up with most everything out there without having to buy a new CPU, MB, RAM, and the like.

What say you all?

Many thanks and have a great Christmas!

I'm thinking you should get a new mobo and go with the SLI option, assuming you have a power supply that can keep up.

The GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R has good reviews.

As for your processors, I'd go with whatever one will overclock the best. If you don't want to overclock, then keep the Q95XX processor.

That board takes DDR2, BTW.

If you are getting 4GB, then get a matched set.
If overclocking, then get something that does better than DDR2-800.

If not overclocking then get something at least JEDEC compliant on voltage (1.8v).

That's all I think I know.
Good luck!

A good cheap and fast HDD is the Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS.
Short of an SSD, that will feel about as fast as velociraptor will for a bit less money.

WTF? Dude, don't get the EP45-UD3R. It's a great board, but it does NOT support SLI. It only has a single PCI-E slot.

The UD3P (note the P), supports two PCI-E x16 slots (at x8 and x8 electrically), but again, even that board does NOT support SLI. Only (ATI) Crossfire.
