Need confirmation before pushing the POWER button

hey guys! This is my fisrt time building a system. I'm first testing the board outside thec ase.
Here's what I've installed so far:
CPU/heatsink
RAM
Video Card
Attached the 20pin power and the other 4pin 12V thing
Attached the small power and reset button.

Should I turn it on now? Did I do everything?

Make sure that the board is on either a large piece of cardboard, an anti-static mat, or a different non-conductive surface.

Otherwise, fire her up!

you could even hook up a keyboard and enter the bios, i wouldnt run it like this for too long, but you can at least set everything up, and see if you have problems.

I touched the HDDs on the sides after a couple of minutes (one new SATA and an old PATA) and they were both pretty hot.
Is this normal?

its normal that hd's get hot they spin at 7,200rpm's what do u think they are gonna be icecool?

When you say hot, do you mean you literally almost burnt your finger? Can you hold your finger there for a while and not have your finger burnt? If you can hold it there and not have it burnt I would say it's ok. Most hard drives do get hot spinning at 7200RPM. What I would suggest is if your case supports an intake fan up front, I'd put one in. I have a P160 with a Sunon 3100RPM 120mm fan for the intake and it keeps my 300GB Maxtor and 74GB Raptor nice and cool.

anyways I'll let it run tomorrow for couple of hours see if they get hot again.

Now a couple more questions:

1. I currently have my dvd+rw as primary master, my old pata hdd as primary slave and
my new sata as third master. Does this configuration look ok? Also...for the dvd burner I think at one point when the comp started..i saw ATA 33..is this right? how can i check in windows?

2. Now windows XP boots from my new SATA which is Fat32. My old one is NTFS. is it okw to have one fat32? will it be slower? cause i dont have a floppy and don;t wanna plug the one from my old computer again...whatta pain in the ass

Usually you put the hd as master and dvdrw as slave. The dvdrw is ok as ATA33.

You can convert fat32 to ntfs later. Or if you reinstall of xp, delete the fat32 partition and recreate as ntfs. Anything on that drive will be deletd though.

Don't think so, Or atleast not worth it. Just have your HDD as master.

You don't need a floppy..you can partition the SATA with NTFS booting from the windows XP CD. I recomend using NTFS over FAT32. Also I would have your PATA hard drive disconnected when installing windows as well, for some reason it sometimes puts the MBR on the PATA drive even if installing windows to the SATA drive, and then windows won't start.

oh nice...didnt know i had to disconnect the pata....but i did anyways (was lucky there)
now i just converted it to ntfs from cmd window...with a command i found on the microsoft website
what's mbr anyways?

Master Boot Record. You have a couple on your HD, basically has all the info recorded about your HD. If one goes you can recover from the second.
