Need Compact Flash Info Please!

Looking for user opinions on Lexar 16x vs SanDisk Ultra II. Online comparisons/reviews would be great too.

Thanks!

I'm not sure about those two...but I do recommend TRANSCEND CF cards. NewEgg has them at great prices, and they are high speed.

Sandisk traditionally makes very slow CF. Not sure about their Ultra II, but their flash memory in general is usually relatively low quality.

SanDisk is good - especially the Ultra series. Those are tested and guranteed to meet specs. My favorite is Lexar. That's what I use in my Canon EOS D60 - never a problem.

The general story goes...whatever you do, DON'T buy Sandisk. The slowest of the lot with highest prices. Not sure about their Ultra II series. Personally I buy Kingston Hi-Speed, although as dartworth says, Transcend has an excellent reputation.

Crap the Ultra II is "supposed" to have a transfer rate of like 9MB/Sec I can't believe no one has info/reviews on it but I can't dig anything up except for a few comments at futureshop.ca

There's been alot of talk over at the RedFlagDeals.com forums about CF.

The dpreview.com link is a good article if a bit outdated.

Yup I agree >>>

In our testing of 1GB Ultra II and 1GB Extreme CompactFlash cards, write speed does in fact click past the 9MB/sec mark with several common Windows benchmarking utilities. Actual throughput in a range of digital SLR cameras is much lower, however, as it is for all cards that push the upper limits of today's CompactFlash technology. Even with the cameras themselves putting the brakes on, however, Sandisk's Ultra II and Extreme are the quickest in all current Canon digital SLR models and the Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro.

Write Acceleration (WA) technology keeps Lexar's best firmly in the lead in the Nikon D1X and D1H, both of which support Lexar's enhanced camera-card communication protocol. WA support isn't enough to completely overcome the raw speed of Sandisk's new flash memory and controller in the Ultra II and Extreme cards in all WA-capable cameras, though. Sandisk's newest performance cards trail the just-released Lexar 1GB 40X WA by less than 2% in the Kodak DCS Pro 14n, and are effectively tied with it in the Nikon D100 (though the Lexar card retains a slight lead in writing NEF format files).

In short, the Sandisk Ultra II and Extreme cards wring about as much write speed performance as possible from today's digital SLR cameras, eclipsing perennial performance leader Lexar in cameras that don't support Write Acceleration, and nipping at the heels of Lexar's speediest offerings even in some of the cameras that do. The Ultra II and Extreme are also quicker across the board than the revamped Ultras, which are being phased out in favour of their higher-performing replacements.

I've found the ridata/ritek cards to be the fastest by far. Got a 1GB here:

Thats a link to a 512 meg for $133 at a store I bought it from very very good cards and great prices for the quality. You can get a 1GB for $245 as well.

You can see here http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ that the ritek card is fastest in read speed and tied for first in write speed .. although that comparison is a bit old still very good reference.

I have a Ridata and it's fine (and relatively fast), but the review you linked is ancient.

Also, people, please note that sometimes the bottleneck is the CF device, not the flash media itself. For instance, ultra fast media won't necessarily be faster in some cameras than moderately fast media, particularly in lower end cameras. Plus, if you're worried about USB transfer speed it will be irrelevant, since USB is slow to begin with.

OTOH, if you buy a high end digital SLR with Firewire, that's a different matter.

I just got a 512 MB card of the SanDisk Ultra II, which is rated at 9 MB/s, which is 60X supposedly, but of course those numbers will be grossly inflated. I have no idea what the real speed is but at least it works fine. I was a bit worried because the camera (Canon G2) is several years old. But like I said, it works fine.

I dunno if I got a killer deal or what, but I just walked into a local store and walked out with a 512 MB card for US$123. It competes with the Lexar CF Pro (40X) media, which is supposedly 6 MB/s (on paper), and the Lexar CF Pro here is considerably more expensive.
