What they NEED to offer is charcoal colored drives for those of us with "black" antec cases :)

I wish newegg would sell the bezels separately. I have two LIte-on's from NewEgg
and since buying them I've switched to black cases. I've searched the LIte-on site
and posted msgs there. I've emailed NewEgg suggesting they stock them. and I've done
web searches for them. There is a company in the UK that sells Lite-on black bezels but
nothing in the US.

I love my Lite-on's but I'm not going to buy two new units just to get black bezels.
(and I'm not going to spray paint a CDRW).

Damn.. I was going to post this a couple of days ago and then thought that it wasn't "technically" a hot deal price wise.

Heh.. I know what you mean. I have a black Antec case and tried to match the drives. I ended up having all my drives matching (black-black), but they don't match my case (black-gray). They do look better than beige drives in a black case and they are covered most of the time anyway because I have the 1000 series with the door. ;)

I did want to pick up one of those cool aluminum cases though and ended up with the Antec because the aluminum cases just didn't look nearly as good to me as soon as you put drives in them (beige or black). The silver or colored drives would look really sweet in an aluminum case.

BTW.. Does anyone know if these are molded in color or just painted by someone? There is no mention of it and by looking at the blue Liteon drives, the finish doesn't look the greatest. Maybe that's why Newegg is doing an exchange only on these drives?
If you decide to do it yourself, dont use spray paint, use vinyl dye.
Looks very nice. Do you have any close ups of the finish? I don't see a problem with painting or dying the face plates at all. That looks easy, but what do you do about the volume knob and open/close button? Also.. What kind of case do you have? Did you do just the front of the bezel or inside the drawer at all? Where did you find the vinyl dye? Sorry for all of the questions. ;)

They need to make Aluminum covers. You buy a nice Aluminum case and have to put plastic drives in the front . Dosn't look good at all.

See my formally beige stuff.

I agree. It's very easy to DIY and you can have it (finished coloring and installed) the same day. Why waste good Hot Deals money on a new drive just to have the front face match, when it's much cheaper to DIY?!? Come on freaks, think! :D

However, if you're buying new components then it's up to you whether or not the deal is worth it, versus your time to DIY. Personally I found a great deal a while back at the Gateway accessories store on colored cdrom drives and burners, so I nabbed them. I'm just saying if you have the drives already you should DIY, IMHO. ;)

Looks like these drives are painted by Newegg themselves
you can see the scuff marks/unpainted beige bits
still a hot deal for those who dont have steady hands

You can get vinyl dye at any auto parts store. Vinyl dyes advantage is that it seems to make the dyed plastic look like it was molded in that color and less likely to chip or peel. You can use spray paint but vinyl dye seems to be the choice of modders for plastic parts so that is what I used.

There are more pics of my AT hot deal $34 case (way back) in this thread over at the hardforums.
The buttons get painted (dyed) along with the (remove first) bezel. For the vol wheel I used a black sharpie.:)
You can get vinyl dye at most places that sell spray paint. Probably a bigger selection at an automotive (i.e. pep boys) type place.
More good vinyl dye info HERE and HERE.

why pay money for ppl to a lousy paint job?
we usually get our DVD, CDRW for free on AT anyways.
might as well take that 40 bucks to a professional and get a glossly looking paint like what we have on our cars.

Silver would look snazzy with a black case. I think I'm going to go with that in the next system (which I've been designing in my head for 4 months now :) ).

Hmm... anyone know if there's a shade of Krylon vinyl dye that matches the Antec midnight grey colored cases? I went to Home Depot and tried to match up a drive bay cover to the different vinyl dyes, but I couldn't get one that matched perfectly.

You just took the words right out of my mouth. I was just about to post this question.

Heh.. If you go the Earl Sheib route, make sure that you don't take anything there that you don't want painted. I hear that he does a great job painting the glass, tires, underbody, etc.. ;)

i still think it's best to leave the way it is.... instead spending extra on those "not so smooth" color drives.... u might as well save that extra money, b/c who knows when another amazing looking case will come along

Directron has been selling colored drives (that they paint) for a while, last week I ordered a silver cheiftec case and a silver floppy and cd-rom. I usually do my own painting with vinyl dye, and it looks great. but, I figured I would give it a shot and save myself some time.
They shipped me a blue cheiftec case and silver drives.

The paint jobs were terrible, they didn't paint the floppy button and they painted the lens for the LED on the CD-Rom
rolleye.gif
. When they packed the drives up they stuck packing tape on the front of the CD-Rom and it pulled some of the paint off the face of the drive when I unwrapped it
rolleye.gif
. I would have had to repaint the drive even if they had sent me the correct color case... I couldn't find a vinyl dye to match the cheiftec blue, but I found a Metal Flake Candy Apple Blue at autozone That is damn close.. I did the buttons and CD-ROM door in black vinyl dye...

Bottom line is: DIY It is simple and you could no worse a job than the vendor would. I could have gotten a better CD-Rom or even a HD on a CD-RW for what the "silver" drive cost and I had to paint it myself anyway. Painting the drives was less hassle than getting an RMA for the case or drives... It's that easy.

i think harddrive.com or thortek.com does the same thing... you could still smell the spraypaint after you open the box... eghk...
