Need Client for Dreamcast!

Ok you guys, why can't we get these game consoles cracking! We need a client to use on them, they do have a processor you know! My kids could assimilate alot of these boxes you know!🙂

wow great idea, those things have some hefty CPU's in them, im sure we could call up Sony (is that who makes them?) and get some documentation on the Dreamcast API.

it would have to be a system where you could (somewhat) easily update the buffers, you could put the Client on a CD, but what would store the buffers? and how would you get them to a PC or somewhere to be updated? what kind of preripherals are available to handle this sort of thing? arent there "memory cartridges" for these things that store saved games? is there a PC interface to those cartridges??

Problem 1 : The CPU's on these consoles aren't that perfect; most of the times it's the videochipset that's advanced
Problem 2 : There is no core for such consoles and there never will be in the near future if you ask me

But it's a nice try 🙂

the problem isn't a core written directly for the processor, rather, for the instruction set (note how long it took to get an athlon optimized client out).

Another problem: PSX doesn't have a very powerful integer unit. All consoles have some swanking FPU units, but in comparison, their integer units aren't very strong. But that doesn't mean that they can't crack, except for the aforemetioned problems of access.

how do we get a client running on our geforce gpus? i think the t&l unit would be able to crack rc5 pretty damn well, as well as seti@home. plus it could store all of it's info in the buffer and use the huge amount of bandwidth... damn!

ya i think that access is the #1 problem, who cares if they are slow. hell, its more blocks!

and no one said they had to be optimized for the instruction set, i bet some of the current primative cores would be compatible, maybe not the best for the chip, but if it puts an idle chip to work, im all for it.

Well the Dreamcast (yes, Sega) has a browser you can use and it does save info to a memory cartridge. It's a dial up unit (56K) and the ISP settings are stored in said memory unit. Now I don't know what processor it uses (I remember Rambus memory discussed in an Anand artical concerning some of these) and I don't know about running a client (of some sort) but it really should be possible. If I remember right some sort of RISC processor is used but don't quote me on that.

If their FPUs are good, they could smoke SETI or GF. 🙂 'Course SETI will never write a client for them, so time to find otlg22...

in my opinion having a mooing console would be like having a mooing SGI, or similiar machine. they work great with video processing, but put them to cracking and they blow. although, any key is better than no key, I don't think it would be worth d.nets effort, considering they wouldn't ever release the source to any of us to port it, (I would make the attempt)

Its a good in theory, but then again, so is communism.
