My kid is getting into fortnite and I'd like him to have a little better experience.
Currently I have:
ASRock B250M Pro4 LGA 1151
Pentium G4600 @3.6GHz
16GB ram
SSD HP EX920 M.2 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe
27 inch 1080P display

this is fast for typical office use and web browsing.
Would a GTX1060 be enough to give better frame rates and quality?
is the CPU a bottleneck? should I look for an i5?
I'd like to stay around $200

thanks!

Best bang for the buck would be to just upgrade the GPU. A new CPU would help too, but a GPU is much more important here. A Radeon RX 570 or 580 is a great option, as are GTX 1660 and 1660Ti.

Like extide stated, your best upgrade path at this point and time (and stated budget of $200) would to get a discrete GPU.

If you can upgrade the CPU to an i5 down the road, it would also be good for modern games. Ever since Intel started releasing 6+ core CPUs, you should be able to get a quad core i5 at a pretty fair price (keep an eye on the 'For Sale' forum for a good deal).

I built a rig for a friend with a G4560 (one step down from your G4600, 3.5Ghz 2C/4T Kaby Lake Core), 8GB of DDR4, and a 2GB R7 260X.

He said it "stuttered". And yet, look at the recommended specs, it's pretty much what they list.
