Need cat help ASAP

Hi,

Our cat (me and Skoorb) is Polly and she is 3. She had her vaccinations just over a month ago, had no problems, but now has this rather large lump on her lower thigh. It is a ball and I can hold it in my fingers and move it slightly. It does not hurt her and you can see it in her leg when she walks. I don't think it is where she had her needle, but it is close if nothing else.

Does anyone know if this is from the vaccination?

She has a vet appt in a few hours, just wanted some advice before hand!

Sounds like a cyst, but if it is that close it could be a reaction to the vaccination.

is it on the inside of her thigh? is she a longhair? if yes to both.. it colud be as simple as a "piece of stool" that got caught in her hair... if it seems to be in her hair only and not attached to her flesh... just slowly pull on it... the cat will try to bite you and whatnot, but when you pull it off, the cat will be soooo happy...

if it's within the substance of the skin, most likely to be a cyst of some variety!

She has really really short hair. It could be a cyst, it could be cancer. It could also be a reaction to the vaccine. Since I have never seen one, I don't know what they are like. It is just like a green pea, only larger. It gives her no pain at all. It is half way down her leg.

Has Polly's behavior changed at all recently, like loss of energy, loss of appetite, or moodiness? If so, then there might be a problem.

Otherwise, it should be ok. My cat had a huge lump in his lymph node area. I was worried it was something but my cat was perfectly fine. He ate well, played and slept regularly. I did take him to the vet and they were going to do a biopsy which was going to cost $250. I decided to wait for another week since his behavior suggested otherwise.

I hope it turns out to be nothing.

It might just be a swollen gland. My cat had that just on her chest behind her front leg. Took a month or so to go away. I'd get it checked out at the vets though just to be safe. Best wishes to Polly.

If she is an outside cat, peel back the fur and look for a puncture wound. Could be from a bite by another cat while fighting or.....

If so, use hot wet washcloth on area for about 5 min every hour until it opens and drains. Be prepared for bright yellow, odeferous pus. Gently squeeze until you see a little blood. End of story.

Really quite a common thing. Used to have to do my cat about once a month. Dummy was fixed too but didnt stop him from fighting.

I'm sorry to say this but it could be cancer . My cousins cat had a situation exactly like that, and it was cancer. She died a bit later. I felt really sad, I was there when they brought her home for the first time, I wathced her grow all those years. Luckily I managed to say my goodbyes before it was too late.

She is an indoor cat, I can see the skin around the lump and it looks perfectly normal. I am really hopping for side effect of vaccination.....if it is something else, then Skoorb and I will manage! She is our baby though...what a darling she is!

Is the lump coloured? In my cousins case, the lump was red.

I hope the best for you! Let us know what the vet says. Seems like it would be extremely operable even it it does turn out to be a tumor, but hopefully it's just a reaction to the vaccines.

You have already done the best thing by making an appointment with your Vet. I know it is hard but try not to be too concerned until told there is reason to be. If it is part of a multi cat household or an outdoor cat the most likely thing it is is an abcess as the result of a fight. If so your Vet will drain it and maybe put a tube in it and give you some meds to apply. I hope it is something simple like this for you and best wishes for Polly.

Another fairly common finding after receiving a vaccine can be a small, marble-sized mass at the injection site. This is most commonly seen in association with rabies vaccines, but can occur after any injection. As long as there is no overt pain or discharge, this side effect is not considered dangerous. This lump can sometimes persist for up to 3 months. If it is painful, has a discharge, gets bigger than a large marble, or lasts greater than 3 months, please call to schedule an appointment to have the lump examined.

Gittyup the vet said it was just scar tissue; no problem - it was rabies as well I think (the shot).

Yup it is scar tissue from her vaccine.

The vet did hesitate and thought it was rather big, but that is all it is!

I hate to bring doom and gloom, but I had a similar situation with a cat. It turned out it was a tumor which we had removed. It came back and we had to take the leg. Poor little guy had to finish out his life as a tripod. That cat more than any other I have ever known defined the nine-lives of a cat. He was hit by a car. Mauled by a racoon. Had cancer twice. Went incontinent. Had partial facial paralysis. He kept on going and going and was for the most part a happy cat.

In all likelyhood, it is a cyst which is nothing to worry about.
