Need cat advice

Went to the pound last August and picked out a beautiful grey female cat with green eyes. I have always had a cat but never one that pees in the house

The cat so far has ruined two futon mattresses, pissed in the corner where we keep our shoes, a little on the couch (was able to clean it up so there is no stain or smell) and just yesterday pissed on my son clothes. The cat has the run of the house with in reason (no counter tops). We even use a laser light and play with the cat all the time. The cat does use the litter box and it is kept clean. I am scratching my head trying to figure out why the cat is pissing all over the house.

I do not really want to take it back to the humane society but I cannot have my house ruined. Any ideas as to what we can do about this?
 
Hmmm this is certainly strange. Does the kitteh have easy access to the litter box? Is there anything else near or around the litterbox that would make the cat not want to go there?

We picked up a stray 4 week old kitten about 3 years ago and the only time she ever went outside the litterbox was when my sister accidentally closed the door to the room for a couple of days when we were away on vacay.

Straight shot down the stairs, nothing that makes noises. Just peace and quiet for the cat
 
Our kitten did this as well but eventually grew out of it. I have no idea why as he used his litterbox but sometimes would just piss all over the place for no damn reason.
 
Is the litter box enclosed? Kitty probably doesn't like that. It might remind kitty of the time spent in a cage at the pound, so kitty would avoid the box.

Even if kitty poops in the box, kitty's bury-the-poop instinct may be stronger than kitty's urge to avoid enclosures.

If it's enclosed, try taking the cover off.

Try putting a second litterbox upstairs.

Also, make sure they arent in open areas... we have ours in the guest bathroom, and we keep a night light to keep it dimly lit at all times.

It is in our water softener room 3x7 quiet and lit 24/7

Get one of these. It won't pee or poo on your carpet.
 
Once a cat pees someplace outside of its litter box it will often continue to pee there even if the spot has been carefully cleaned. They have a much better sense of smell than we do and tiny traces of urine that we can't detect are easy for them to smell. Cats will also sometimes pee on dirty underclothes or kids bedding that may have minute traces of urine on them.

You need to visit a good pet store and get a cleaner that is specifically designed to chemically neutralize pet urine. Clean everyplace the cat has ever peed. Clean everyplace the kids may have ever peed. Then reinforce good behavior by placing the cat at the litter box regularly or anytime you see her searching for a place to go.

Are you watering her with softened water? All that salt in a kitteh can't be good.
Any changes or stressors in the home? Mine(female) never marked until we moved into this house with it's 5 adult cats, 4 males & 1 other female all fixed.
