I am pretty lost at the moment in deciding what I want to do with my life. I know this is not a question you can just have other people answer for you, but I figured I would post up on here for ideas.

I am 22 years old, and just graduated school with a BA in psych / business minor. As some may know, there aren?t too many places looking for people with BAs in psych. I choose a psych degree because the classes were fun and my parents wanted me to go to college. I do not want to go to graduate school, or do any more schooling if I can avoid it.

Right now I am living at home with the parents, and I want to move out, be independent and be on my own. I live in a large metropolis area and rent isn?t cheap here unfortunately. I have no clue exactly what the cost of living is, but I know 1 bedroom apartments are 600-700 (depending on which part of town you are in). Right now I don?t know of anyone looking for a roommate, but that?s okay, because I think I'd prefer to live alone.

I currently am unemployed and have been for a few weeks, just got done doing a 3 month IT contract in a desktop support position. I am pretty good with computers and worked at the helpdesk in college for 2 years, so I could probably continue this route, but honestly I'm not sure if I could stomach it for very long. Also I'm not sure if I could ever afford to buy a house, if working as a lowly IT helpdesk person.

I like jobs that are very physically active, but I know that in reality people nowadays are paid to use their minds not their bodies. For example, I'd love to load boxes or something 8 hours a day (boxes not heavy enough to break my back, though) but I know that jobs like these only pay 10 bucks an hour or so tops, which I doubt I could live off of in my city.
I also like jobs where I?m trying to market an idea or product to someone, but not if it means working on commission.
I also like problem solving and fixing things, hence why I kind of like IT. But I would probably get sick of IT after awhile.

I know I should find a job soon, but?
I don?t want to jump into some other contract where I'm in the same boat looking for another job in a few months. Nor do I want to pick some crappy job or some low paying job, where I want to find another in a few months.

So, that?s the boat I'm in.

Cliffs:

-I'm 22 yrs old. Looking for a job. Have a BA in psych / business minor. Don?t want to go back to school. Have some IT experience too (but not sure if I could keep doing IT)
-Need a job that pays enough so that I can move out and live in an apartment or something (rent is 600-700 around here for 1br apartments)
-I like marketing ideas/products, I like fixing things, and I like active jobs
-I don?t like contracting jobs, commission jobs, and prefer not to work extremely inactive jobs.
-Need advice

Well what I'm getting from all of this is that you have sexual fantasies in the form of dreams about Sigmund Freud.

So why do you want to bang Sigmund Freud and his mom so much? Perhaps Dr.Phil, Jerry Springer or Oprah could shed some light, camera and action to all of this?

go into construction, framer or drywaller. the pay is better than most blue collar jobs

or join the military and go kill some terrorists, that is a physically active job also

do blood/guts bother you?
maybe you could be a medic, the health care field is growing much faster than the rest of the economy, you could be a medic/corpman in the Navy and when you get out you could work in a hospital

medical field is a little more physically active than a desk job in a cubicle farm

good luck! :moon:

The simple truth of the matter - your options are limited:

Jobs can be interesting, easy to get, or well paying. The catch is, you can only pick two.

Well paying and interesting isnt easy to get, and you dont really have the education to do so.
Well paying and easy to get, is usually backbreaking, and rarely interesting - the jobs no one wants to do.
Interesting and easy to get - you'll probably be working for free.

I've been in your situation. I chose to move out, and worked a job I didnt particularly like, that wasnt particularly well paying. I ended up going back to school, to get a well paying, secure but requires lots of education, somewhat interesting job.

So decide whats more important to you - personal freedom, or a job you like. At this point in your life, you can't really have both, at least not quickly or easily.

hadnt thought of the medic position. that would be interesting. i could probably live with blood and guts.
then i would just have to decide if i wanted to be in the navy for 4 years, lol. it would be weird being overseas for that long, and missing out on my young twenties in the US
but i suppose thats the only way to become a medic without going to school.

the only thing field related job a BA in psych is good for is social worker.

you need a Masters in psych to be a professional counselor's license.

if you dont want a desk job, try the Starbucks barista career route.

1st 3 months = barista ~$9/hr (including tips). get promoted to shift supervisor (~$11/hr). a year later, become assistant mgr (~$35k/yr + 10% bonus). a year after that mgr (~$50k/yr + 15% bonus).

Since you have a 4 yr degree, you should be ahead of the line for asst mgr position. (since starbucks is contantly opening new stores, they constantly need mgrs.)

downside-> you'll be working at $11/hr ($23k/yr) for a year. after maxing out 401k and Roth IRA, you wont have enuf $ for rent, much rent/food/entertainment/insurance/misc expenses. you're stuck at home. (Dont even think about cutting back on your 401k!!!.)

or join the army. 4yr degree = officer. with bush neutered during this past election, you probably wont be going to Iraq.

Why would someone major in a liberal arts field and not a.) want to continue their education or b.) become a grammar/secondary school teacher is beyond me. The fact that you went to college simply because your parents wanted you to simple adds to the "aghastness" that is my state of mind, currently.

i would love to work UPS but their shifts and hours and pay absolutely suck.

wages are 8.50 per hour. 20 hours of work per week. granted there is good health care included and that whole tuition benefit thing (if i ever go to school again)

but the shifts around here are: 5pm-9pm 10pm-2am, and 3am-7am

I checked the fedex website and it didnt look much different there :(

$9 an hour isnt bad for somebody who makes coffee, lol. But I would definately HAVE to get those promotions or else I'd be stuck at a low wage. Is it really super easy to get promoted at starbucks?

yeah, well in college you can only take gen ed classes for so long before you have to choose something. it was either that or take a break from college to figure it out.

i was too focused on school, and trying to do well on my last huge papers and stuff like that. i had my internship in the spring too, but that was just a research assistant position.

I had a Psych professor in college tell all of us students, that a career in Psychology involved getting a PhD. Anything less and it is extremely difficult to find a job.

I don't think there are many physically active jobs for people with college degrees. Those types of jobs are often left those to blue collars.

Well, probably a military officer.
