Have a Athlon xp 1700+ I need a good (better ) heatsink and fan. Right now current temp. is 43c. when I put the case on it goes up to 53.. so, I have the case side off... :) I am putting a 2nd 80mm vent fan in the case. brining it up to 3 fans in case total and I still want a better heatsink on it..... what is the best bang for the buck??

what motherboard do you have? if it is compatible, then go for the alpha pal8045 with a panaflo fan. thats the combo i have for my iwill kk266, and its great!

the mobo is an ASUS A7V266, Curently there is one fan in front of the case sucking air into the case... There is one in the back right below the power supply blowing out.. the power supply has 2 fans built in. to pull air from inside the case through the power supply and push it out.. I plan on putting a 3rd fan on the side panel in front of the power supply.....

Look at the ALPHA PAL 8045 and see if it is compatable with your MOBO. Panaflo makes a good fan with good flow and relatively low noise.

I'm looking at that alpha 8045... and how does it connect to the cpu? I don't see any clips on it??

it uses the four holes in your motherboard around the socket. its a much better and more secure way of mounting a heatsink, especially a heavy one. its is a little more complicated to install, but its easily worth the trouble for its performance. alpha includes very detailed intructions with pictures, so you dont have to worry about whether or not you'll be able to figure it out.

I was just looking at the compatiblity chart and it says that I will probalby have to cut some out of the heatsink to get it to fit... on my mobo. so um....... so do you have to take the mobo out to put the heatsink on then?? and it just screws down? that sounds to me like I would be breaking my new cpu........

The alpha mobo compatibility page suggests that you MAY have to cut a piece of a standoff washer so it doesn't touch a surface mounted resistor on your mobo, not cut a piece of the heatsink. Cutting a piece of the (plastic) washer is no big deal at all and may not even be necessary.

Yes, you have to take the mobo out completely to install this heatsink in order to install the standoff washers and the nuts under the mobo to secure them,

It's not that big a deal to do, and I am more happy with my alpha 8045 with panaflo fan (don't get an alpha with a delta fan- too loud) than any other HSF I've tried. It cools well and is the quietest HSF for Athlon I've experienced.

lepper boy do you plan to overclock??

if you feel weary about maybe having to make modifications to your mobo to get that alpha to fit... there are SOOOOOOOO many other good hsf's out there on the market... just to name a few:

Thermalright SK6
Thermalright AX7 (new one)
Vantec 6035
Swiftech MCX462
SVC Golden Gate
Cooler Master HHC-001
Dynatron BH-625
GlobalWin CAK38

i have the golden gate.....it's decent but i'd say stick with anything that uses an 80mm fan.......the glacial 68 is pretty decent....and CHEAP too......

I have Antech 1030 case with two supplied Antech 80mm fans extracting in rear of case.

XP1600 with Alpha 8045U (Delta fan included in this model) with fan blowing onto the heatsink.

Max temp I've seen is 41C with xP1600 overclocked to 148MHz FSB running several games. Temp monitor is Hardware Doctor included with Abit mobos. Case buttoned up.

I haven't tried reversing fans - no need to.

Hope this helps!

Right now as my computer sits. it says it is 28c/82f on the mobo temp... cpu temp is 48c/118F that is with just doing some typing and net surfing...

sLOGUN If you look again note 2 is referring to a differnet mother board. note 1 says that it hits one of the capacitors and ou may have to dremel around it.....

Ah , yes , I see that note1 now. Still doesn't sound like much of a problem.

I would work on better case cooling 1st. That is your problem. If cpu temp goes up 10c just by putting side on case, HS/fan isn't your problem. It is your case cooling. START there!
Then get the SVC GC68, it's all you will need and is less then $18 shipped!

That SVC GC68 is a bit loud at 36.9dBA .
I've got the one with the 28dBA 30cfm fan on my game server and I like the Alpha PAL 8045T/80mm Panaflo much better, but if price and the trouble configuring is a concern, get the SVC GC68 with the quieter 30cfm fan for only 12 bucks.

I know I need a better venilated case and am workign on that... But when the side is off and the mobo temp is 27C/80F and the cpu is 42C/108F I want to deal with that as well.... thanks for all the advise... I got me a global win WBK 38....

My WBK68 does a nice, if somewhat noisy job, but that WBK38, yeow, at 46.5 dBA that is at the upper limits of HSF noise, as loud as a delta.

right now my freaking case sounds like an airplane.... and I figure I will change the fan on it... I have also found out why it is so noisy..... The blow fan in the front. doesn't have anough vent space to suck in air from the outside. When I unplug it it gets extremly quiet... so I am going to have some fun modding my case. i'm going to put a window in it and a fan on the side (bottom front) to blow air into the case. So it won't have any air restrictions... and then add a 2nd one up top to push air out. And through me in a nice little plexi glass window... I'll be posting pics when i'm done with it.. :)
