NEED -- basic video card -- suggestions?

I am looking for a good, cheap video card for my parents pc. I am building them a new one because it's not worth getting a Dell or Gateway.

TWO Requirements:
1. UNDER 75 bucks
2. Play Day of Defeat (not source)

I have been looking at GeForce MX4000 -- is that sufficient for DoD???

i have a ati rage pro that is sufficent for the original half life engine...
anyway, just about any card can play orig hl engine at about any resolution(it's basically a modded q2 engine).
go geforce ti4200. used around $65. plays even newer games(like source in dx7/8 mode) well enough.

It's good enough to play around low-medium with good (30-40 fps) framerates. There are better cards under seventy-five dollars, like the 9550 and the 9600SE, but to get those it'd be really close to your limit.

a 440mx can run it easily on dx7.
ti4200 will obliterate those speeds

You say you're building them a system?

Well, if they can afford a socket 939 Athlon64 (the lowest one, 3000+ is pretty well priced!) then look no further than a motherboard based on the ATI RS480 chipset.

Not only is it a solid, reliable motherboard, but you also get "free" Radeon almost-X300 graphics built in! For a sub-$100 motherboard, you can't beat that! 🙂 Great value, and the A64 platform will keep them going for a good LONG time, as it'll be ready for Windows64 and 64-bit software down the road, as well as faster CPUs when they come out (and get cheaper!)
