Hello ive been away from the PC seen for a couple of years,Im looking to build a system based on the amd 1800xp cpu.Would anyone reccomend a good motherboard for this system for under $150, also id like to overclock it at least 50mhz ,is that possible with this cpu.And all these different types of memory is abit confusing ,do these cpus run at a maximum of 266 memory speed,if so what type of memory do i need for it.

Most bang for the buck on mobo's for overclockability, i'd say the EPOX 8KHA+, it goes for well under $150.
For RAM, get either Crucial or Corsair (crucial should be much cheaper), you should be able to get over a 50mhz total overclock. You should be able to get the FSB up to at least 145 from the default 133 setting. The multiplier on the XP1800+ is 11.5 i believe, so this gives you 145*11.5=1667.5mhz, a good 133mhz overclock from the default 1533mhz.

eep... forgot to mention that the memory type is PC2100 (or PC2100/2400/2700 from corsair) DDR-RAM, so 133mhz fsb w/ double data rate = 266mhz effectively.

I just built my first AMD system myself and man is it nice. I have a XP +1600(1.4ghz) unlocked and o/c to an +1800(1.54). I can't get past 138 fsb but I "think" that is due to my nic. I am using a Shuttle AK31A and 256mb of Crucial DDR. Make sure you get a good HSF. I have heard and read very good things about the SK-6. My temps run about 40c idle.

Just built my second AMD machine. I would highly recommend the EPoX 8KHA+ mobo and Corsair PC2400. I have my 1700+ running smooth as silk @1640 (11*149). Absolutely a great overclocking mobo and the RAM is top notch. The EPoX is very cheap and super stable. Throw a nice SK6 hs/f on there, my friend, and you'll be an overclocking beast. 🙂
