Hi guys

I’m in the process of getting a new PC and need some advice.

I’ll be upgrading from a P4 3.2Ghz, 1gig DDR2 667, X1800XL.

Here are some more info on my requirements.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

I’m going to use it for gaming, editing videos, plying music and videos, MS office and browsing the internet, streaming media to my PS3.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

R2500 – R3000

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

South Africa

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

I’ve only used Intel processors but I wouldn’t mind running a AMD PC.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I want to use my 19inch LCD, mouse and keyboard, 5.1 Logitech speakers, ATI X1800XL, 3 Hard Drives – 2 Sata, 1 IDE, and 6 in 1 memory card reader.

I have a Thermaltake Ultima 90, if I can use it I’d like to.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

I like to over clock but I need this PC to be stable 24/7, if that’s going to be an issue I’d run it stock.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

My max resolution on my monitor is 1204 X 1024, so it would be that resolution.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

I need to have it up and running by Feb. 2010

I checked out this advert and it looks good to me.

I was thinking about the top left one, the E7400 @ R2499

Any thoughts on that system?

Thanks for the help.

I assume you're going to stick with XP...smart money says both RAM slots are occupied, and you're not going to like NT6.x with only one gig.

Power supply is probably enough to power the specs. Add the video card, reader and three hard drives, and the system probably won't boot.

Since you have an Ultima 90, I assume your mobo is socket 775. Instead of buying a whole box, you might wanna look into any available multi-core procs that your mobo supports...this will help considerably for video editing. Then double (or triple) your RAM.

Hi Slugbait, Yes I'm going to stick with XP.

And yes my mobo is a socket 775 but its not booting up at all(I did some testing and I think its dead) that’s why I’m thinking of getting a new pc cause I’d rather build a new one now then have another part die on me, my PC is old.

I’ve done some more reading and I think the E7400 is a good way to go for me.

I do video editing but not as much as I did before and as far as I understand, this new processor should give me a boost when it comes to playing games or video editing.

As far as a motherboard is concerned, any recommendations? And how much ram should I get for this system, cause I’ll be using Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.

Any input will be great.

I would toss out the ATI X1800XL and buy a new card. That card is really old, and you can get cards for around 120 USD that will simply BLOW that card out of the water.

Anything you get now will be worlds faster then the P4 you got :)

Good luck

Thanks for the help.

you realize 3000 rand is only 400ish dollars.... that's not a lot to build a computer with.

Hi guys thanks for the input.
I'm going to stick with my X1800XL for a little longer.

I think I'm going to go for the E7400, from what I've read it seems like a good over clocker and its price seems good.
What mobo would you guys recomend for that processor?
