You were correct on the cooler...not for 1156. Canceled it and I ordered this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...20NH-U9B%20SE2 instead. According to my measurements, it should fit with room to spare.

Noctua stuff is top quality. I have all Noctua fans and cpu heatsink in my desktop.

if you're going to spend 450ish I would get an LSI 9260-8i or 9261-8i (only difference being the sf8087 plug location) for $480ish

its going to be ~$100 cheaper than the Areca ARC-1880i and can use expanders, which the 1222 cant do

thanks for the advice....i was thinking that too, but really wanted to go with the best quality card in my budget. I'm finding that Areca is the best at this price point. Of course i have zero experience to back that up.

Got all 8 of them fired up tonight. I can't believe how quiet the case is and this is with the extra case fan. I'm just initializing an array so nothing hugely heat generating but still 10 drives total spinning. Makes my other server sound like an airplane taking off and it has the same number of physical drives!

I have a feeling if I stuck wings on some of the 1U and 2U fans I might be able to create something that does indeed fly. ;-)

PICS!!! or VIDS!!!!

PICS!!! or VIDS!!!!

I'll post a couple tonight. Went to bed at 11:20 and the array was at 10% initializing. Done when I checked in the morning at about 7:00. Only formats to a bit over 10Tb with 8 2TB drives in RAID6. I wish 2TB was 2TB 🙂 Will try to do some testing this weekend. I stuck with a 64K stripe size.

A few pics. I'll post a couple videos with sound as soon as I figure out how to post an mpg to my comcast page 🙂

Formats to 11170Gb which is better than I originally thought.

yeah post some AS/CDM/ATTO benchies please.

I've never really had a change to do raid-6 just raid-5 and now i only use raid-10(1+0)

Bish are you using the SGPIO cables for the HDD's?

http://www.provantage.com/3ware-cbl-...m~73WAR02P.htm

These are the cables I am using. I ran some quick benches late last night while I was REALLY tired. I thought I was seeing insanely high numbers. Some reads were around 800MB/s but maybe I was just dreaming 🙂 I'll run some tonight and post. I have AS and ATTO, what is CDM? Crystal Disk?

Anybody know how to host a video on a comcast personal web page? I got pics down but can't figure out how to upload a. mpg and have it available from my web page to link here.

I know my case came with one SGPIO = SFF-8485 cable. It says it supports up to 4 drives so i will need another one to support 8 total. I was just wondering if you were using it. Its for the HDD LED's and health indicators.

Yes CDM is CrystalDiskMark.

How large is the video? upload to youtube?

Ah, nope, not using it.

Guys, would it benefit me to get a
Areca ARC-1880ix-12

instead of the 1880i if i could get the 1880ix-12 for CHEAPER than theh 1880i?

I found what you are looking at 🙂 It is a good card and has 2x the onboard memory 1GB v. 512MB). Big thing is that it has an onboard expander so figure a few more watts a bit more heat and it will be harder to get other expanders to hook up to it. If you are OK with the above, great deal (I won't pick it up though)

Thanks for the quick feed back. I'm thinking though with the 3 sas connectors giving me the ability to use up to 12 SATA drives, I will never need to use an expander, correct?

I can't ever see this server running more than 8-10 drives.

ruby told me to buy this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816151053

long story short, i dont like dedicated controller cards which take 2 min to cycle though 8 drives.. ^_^

im curious to see what controller cards people recomend.
Anyone with a faster bootup then standard controller cards?

like it doesnt sit there and tick each drive 1 at a time.

The newest firmware in the 1880-ix series has a countdown timer which is good to see if there is a problem on detecting drives, expanders, etc. It takes 20-23 seconds on mine and then it goes. Not a bad wait and good things come to those who wait! 😛

Once you use one it's hard to go back to motherboard raid or especially a laptop.

well, unfortunately i missed the open box sale on the 1880ix card. I'm going to pick up one of the 1880 cards as soon as they go back on sale. i'm in no hurry so i do not want to pay full price right now.

why should it matter? i have uptime of 180+ days usually on patch average for serves (ESX4.0) 2 minutes? that's industry standard normal to wait 2-3 minute to boot a server
