Ahh the more I think about it with DDR2 and PCI express and all that jazz coming out later maybe getting a socket 754 board now wouldn't be such a bad idea, then upgrade later with a board capable of all that other stuff. Well assuming I go the Nforce 2 route any board reccomendations. I ahve heard DFI Infinity Ultra, and ASUS A7N8X, I don't know something like that, are both good choices, but are they more then I need?

Well since I have to go out to CC and yell at them about a rebate problem, I suppose I could check out that memory deal, so why exactly do i need a magnifying glass for, what would I be looking for?

some memory sticks supposedly have faster memory on them so they might run at a higher speed -- nothing to care about if you'll be running at stock speed. And like I said above, overclocking a server is not a great idea.

With a little patience, you should be able to pick up a 400SC with a 2.4C for less than 300 shipped after rebate.

Yeah I know, and I am tempted to go that route, I am keeping an eye out for a deal, but am also seriously considering building it myself. But I would much rather spend 300.00 then 5-600.00.

Yeah i kinda figured that, just wondering what exactly to look for, and yes I remember what you said about OCing. Even PC2700 is running a faster bus then my processor, so I might as well get the best stuff I can, right?

Ahhh I keep forgetting about those 400SC's using ECC memory, what does that stuff run?

I say go to Retrobox.com and get a non-Compaq, non-HP PIII box of some sort. SHould be easy to keep it under $200 (and likely under $150) w/o monitor. For monitor, either use a KVM, or see about any cheap or old ones (FS/FT or somewhere).
Like this one

For messing around w/ networking and/or file storage, running a domain or AD server, etc., it doesn't take a massive machine.

For windows, get a used P3 or older Athlon, a 1ghz box for learning purposes should be plenty. Should also keep you under $300, try your local mom&pop stores also.
For linux, you don't even need that much power, you can use knoppix as a good start, don't have to install anything and it's a free download :).

Okay, i think i neglected to let you in on a some info. While I could use the extra computer and learning experience now, I won't actually be going to school till June and even then probablly won't start any actual networking classes till next quarter.

SO like I said, getting a rig now would be great, but I am not in a huge hurry, so i am willing to wait for a deal or something.

That actually brings me to another question, more networking related, but I will just add it to this thread. I am currently living in my in laws basement, but will be moving into a 2 bedroom townhome in August. I currently have dial up, but plan to get broadband when I move. So my question is, what and when should I get network equipment, most likely a router?

I know buy.com has deals on both the netgear WGT624(not sure if that is the exact model number, its soemthing like that) as well as the Dlink DI 624. Both for about 55 bucks. They are wireless router by the way.

I know if I get broadband, then I should get a router, so that is pretty certain. I don't actually need wireless, but it would be nice to have one computer downstairs and one upstairs, plus it gets me experience with wireless, so i think thats the wya I want to go.

Basically just wondering if I should bite on one of those deals now, or wait till I really actually need it and get whats hot then? But really will there be anything that great coming out in the next few months? Or should I get something completely differant. I know both of those routers have issues, but then again what wireless routers don't?

Looks like there is a semi good deal on the 400SC right now. Not jumping in yet unless it gets better.

Wow I just saw a guy post in that thread that the 400SC's can use non ECC ram, is that true? That was one thing that was holding me back from going that route.
