I want a game to run on the kid's power user account with the RunAs / admin/password without Having to
type it in all the time. The game is Diablo 2 and it won't even see the cd if it's not run under an Admin account!:|

I tried to search the Ms knowledge base but there is nothing for XP pro without a domain.

I've heard that it is possible after it is run this way the fist time, that you don't have to keep
putting the password, which I won't let the kid have for obvious reasons!

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

I'm guessing you need something like "raw device access" in Unix-speak to deal with the copy-protection. I don't know how to to do that in XP, but an easier workaround might be to find a no-CD hack.

Here's an example I did with Quicktime Enjoy

C:\WINDOWS\system32\runas.exe /user:my-xp001\administrator /savecred "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe"

NOTE !!!!! SAVECRED IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN XP PRO !!!!

"The game is Diablo 2 and it won't even see the cd if it's not run under an Admin account " --> Sounds like trouble , check the User Rights

haven't followed the entire thread so forgive if this is off...

supply the computer name where the account exists instead of a domain when you're in peer to peer.

I've got d2 on a couple xp boxes at home. I'll take a closer look at this for you tonight...but you shouldn't let your kid play heroinware anyway hehe.

Many programs are poorly design because they have trigers that weren't set to all users to use durring the install (very likely not in the default Programs Files or WINNT folder).

Find that directory & give the apropriate user the read, execute & list rights.

Or reinstall the game under the user name to reset the triger for that user, and repeately install for all users that you want access to the program. (Sometime Windows screw up when you indicate "Let all user use this application" during install & only give the rights to the user that install the program).

Workaround using RunAs...

You can create a batch file that will run RunAs on top of another executable. You will be prompted for the password, but it is better than typing out the username and password every time.

Open notepad and type the following:

runas /user:your username programname.exe
ex: runas /user:jsmith explorer.exe [Will run explorer.exe using jsmith's credentials; type DOMAINNAME\jsmith if you are using domain credentials]

Save the document as "programname.cmd" (make sure you put quotes around the name or notepad will save it as a text document).

There are other options for RunAs (ex: You can have the program under another user environment). Type runas at the command prompt for the complete list.

It seems to me that the actual problem is a permissions/user rights issue, but is difficult to determine without being able to see it.

Hey Smilin, he's 15, so i figure he's old enough! LOL

brandonm I have tried all that :disgust:, and still no go.

All permissions are given, the game is installed under his account!

I have received a response from Blizzard around 6pm, which tells me to d/l a securom patch to give user access. It is a service and it start whenever the pc is booted. But I still get the same message to insert the CD.:|
I just sent them another email and will see what response I get.

Here is the file if anyone wants to try it. Patch

Thanks everyone for the help!:) it is very much appreciated.
