Didn't see it recommended yet, and I didn't finish it but it seemed fun: Anachronox.

The Legend of Grimrock is awesome. The Witcher 2 is probably the best RPG I have ever played. Dragon Age Origins is also pretty good, but not as good as either of the other two I mentioned.

The only other RPGs I have gotten immersed in are older games you have probably already played. I can suggest Mount and Blade:Warband as it is very addicting. It is more of a true RPG than most games though. You really do have to pick out a role and play it, and it is quite openended.

On pearl I discovered a long time ago: Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga.

Awesome game that simply hooked my to my screen, couldn't stopped. Highly recommend it and it's pretty cheap on Steam at $24.

Don't get Divinity 2: Ego draconis, get Dragon Knight Saga, you get lots of new content for a few dollars more.

I would agree on this game, but also emphasize to get Dragon Knight Saga which includes an expansion pack. I guarantee you, you would be upset at the end of the first game if you did not have the expansion. Suggestions that I would also second would be Kotor 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, and Skyrim. The first 2 Mass Effect games were also great, but the third one left me very angry and disappointed at the end. If you are more interested in gameplay than a series with a great ending that brings closure to everything, try the Mass Effect trilogy.

Bought Jade Empire on sale a few years back. I REALLY Wanted to like it. Just didn't. not because of any particular failing. It seemed like a great game. But I just found it harder and harder to go back to. Finally, I just stopped playing.

That's a shame, it remains one of my all-time favorites. It's also probably the only legit game (i.e. not porn) that allows you to have a threesome. :D

I just grabbed M&M 8 off GOG.
Had forgotten how tedious some things were, like grinding away for a level to get 5 skills points and then find out it costs 6 just to increase your skill one level. Or that theres no good way to enhance necromancer HP and they get stomped easily. Also the pain of managing your inventory. And trying to keep a decent array of potions handy.
Worst part was I forgot you have to chase down skill trainers. That is so god damn annoying. And when you get a new member you have to make sure he gets all his available skills, then see if he can be trained up in any of them. And get him spells if he can have them.

BUT, I'm having fun regardless. Oh, and I forgot you dont make a team, you start with one guy and then have to recruit more, which can be a hassle. But it also means you can drop folks on a whim and remake your party as you see fit. Thats something they never allowed in other games.

Star Trek online. It's free, ship combat is best out there, community has improved. They got dailies and lots of solo stuff. Ground combat ain't bad now either. Just remember its free so don't expect miracles. Use it as top up game.

But your main game should be EVE. Go 0.0, PVP, blow stuff up and get your mind off stuff.

Hope your RL troubles work out. I know the feeling.

Now wait a sec. Is that ship combat still where you fly around trying to stay in range and rotate your shields against the enemy, spamming your 'attack with all' button?

That was far from 'good combat' in my opinion.

Maybe it's changed? What I liked about it: nice pretty space, and some nice story quests.

Still recommending quest for glory series, since you like old-school rpg's and haven't played it yet.

I see you are leaning toward The Legend of Grimrock. I'm currently playing it and having fun but all it takes is one tough puzzle for a road block and the frustration level sky rockets. Lucky you can find spoilers to help you. I try not use any and give a real go at it but after a few hours I submit and look it up.

Level 4 was the first one that I ran into that I could not figure out. Once I saw the solution I knew I would have never of thought of doing that. level 9 is anther pisser that gave me all kinds of grief. Still with all that said I'm having a blast in this game. I actually like leveling up my characters more then the puzzles.

Vampire The Masquerade (sp?)

There were actually 2 VAM games, one an rpg, and I think the other was an action/adventure game (never played it).

The rpg was quite good, if you download the fan patches to take out the worst of the bugs.

IIRC, the rpg one was Bloodlines, maybe?

Yep, the first Vampire Masquerade was a meh action rpg, mostly action.
But Vampire Bloodlines is a truly great RPG. It would be up there with the likes of BG2 if not for the overly long sewer level.

I'm gonna completely ignore the OP and recommend some adventure games. The longest journey and Still life

I see EA/Bioware are doing a reboot of the Ultima world. Ultima Forever, which is based off Ultima 4 but rebooted so there will be differences.

http://ultimaforever.com/

Hopefully it's not aimed at console kiddies.

Well, looks like a F2P MMO, not clear what will distinguish it other than the name. Also not sure why not just play Ultima Online for Ultima.
