Need an LCD

OK, I have had my 21" Viewsonic G810 CRT for a while now, but since I will be moving into the dorms in the fall, I am going to need something smaller. Basically here is what I want:

-17"
-1280x1024
-preferably 12ms response or less
-under $300

I have been looking at the Samsung 710N and they seem to have great specs, but some people I have talked to seem to think that the lack of DVI is a problem.

I game pretty heavily, but I am not extremely picky. I am pretty sure my 6600gt can handle 1280x1024 in CS:S (which is pretty much all I play now anyways).

Thanks for any advice!

The Samsung is actually pretty good. I have a friend running that one on his rig and I think the quality is fine for gaming. Great price too.

I personally wouldn't get an LCD if it didnt have DVI..but..I guess it depends on how little you want to spend.

Is there any reason? I realize that the higher end models all use DVI, but is there any advantage at relatively lower resolutions (1280x1024). I really don't want to pay a premium for a different cable if it makes no difference...

As I said, I am on a tight budget, I need to save around $2000 for books and such for the fall, which is only going to leave me a few hundred bucks.

Thanks for the help!

Usually the lcd if its retail packed will come with the DVI cable and I believe it gives a more sharper picture and/or text.

But the board only has a vga connection (hence the issue). I have heard that DVI can handle the images a bit better, but does this only apply to higher resolutions?

i was gonna suggest the NEC 1770GX since i have the 1970GX (19" version) and i think it is pretty insane. However, on the NEC site, it says it's 399.99US but only 419.99CAN? it's out of your price range but do take a look... i love the glass like screen

I couldn't find the gx on newegg, but there were others (nx, xm). they looked decent, but with slightly worse specs than he samsung, plus all were a little over $300. I wouldn't mind spending up to $400, but it would really have to be worth it.

Is there any hope of me finding one of these in a local store (staples is nearby, bestbuy and compusa within an hour). That may help me out with shipping cosdts and any dead pixels.

Thanks again. Think I'm gonna call it a night...

In canada, they only sell these at Futureshop. Don't know about the states... You have to see these in person though... I have a 19" NEC CRT beside my 19" LCD and the LCD is SHARPER than the CRT. The glass like screen makes a difference.

I got that Samsung monitor for my gf. Other than the 1 dead pixel, it's very nice! I have the samsung syncmaster 712N. Also very nice.

There's a lot more to DVI than just a different cable. It's a digital interface, as opposed to an analog VGA interface. There is definately a quality difference, but not a huge one. If you're not picky, as you say, then VGA will probably suffice.
