need an audiophile setup

I never realized what a sound nut I was until recently. After I get my sound card I want to get a nice setup for music listening. I was thinking of going from my sound card to an Onkyo digital audio processor to this preamp

Or is the preamp un-necessary? Also I need a solid headphone recommendation, ones that were made for pc would be great. Thanks.

That's a phono stage (for turntables). You'd want a line stage.
Do you want a headphone amp or a pre-amp?
I'd get sennheiser 580's, 650's if you think your ears are good enough to hear the minor differences.

Are you listening primarily to headphones or loudspeakers? A top-shelf sound card can perform the same processing as the stand-alone Onkyo, so that's kinda redundant. If you're only listening to phones, just plug em into the sound card and be done with it.

Ah, my mistake.

Mostly headphones since I live in an apartment and I play online with a group that uses ventrilo. I guess I will just stick with my sound card thread. Any ideas you have you can post there.

If you have nice high impedence headphones, getting a headphone amp is probably the next step you'd want to think about.

(you might want to pick a budget before you get there so you don't end up totally broke)
